Moving into a flat next month... Tips?

HAL9000

Lifer
Hey People,

Moving into a flat next month (I.e. I'm moving out of my parents house) and I'm looking for suggestions on things I need to watch out for, or unexpected costs I may not have considered.

I've budgeted for:

-Food
-Utilities
-Internet
-Contents Insurance
-Phone

Anything else? Or just tips in general are welcome Insults are not welcome

i'd say food is something not to underestimate. when I moved out after getting a job, I ate out so much. it's ridiculous how much it adds up.

I'm budgeting £50 per week just for me... That seems enough.... Is it?

if i did my math correctly that converts too $11/day. I spend that much for 1 meal(usually alot more), unless you go to mcdonald's.../barf

then factor in beer budget...

yeah $80 is underestimating if it were me, but I don't know your lifestyle

Dont you already have a cell phone? Why do you need two phone lines?

Drop the internet, you dont need it.

How old are you to be moving out of your parents house?

You can save money on food by donating blood for donuts.

I'm not putting alcohol into the food budget, nor am I including going out for food those expenses come out of my "fun" budget. 🙂 So that food budget is just for stocking up the fridge.

That is for my mobile phone.

I disagree.

They don't give you money or doughnuts around here if you donate blood.

It's that whole English to American translation problem...

Flat = Apartment
lbs = dollars (too lazy to find the pound symbol) (or to figure how many lbs to the dollar) but 50 does seem really low. For instance how much is a typically dinner? multiply by 7 days and I think you will be way over 50.

Council tax? TV licence/cable fees?

Just become a full time student, so no council tax. I don't watch TV so no TV licence or TV fees 🙂

You'll want more for food ... probably 150~ pounds per month.

Yeah I've gone for £50 a week = £200 pm so that should be enough I think 🙂

Where are you moving to?

Sticking in Essex, not moving too far 🙂

When did you get unbanned? haha

Yesterday 🙂

Yeah flat = apartment here too 🙂

£50 pw = $80 pw...

Car / gas. Entertainment budget... I'm assuming you'll leave that flat sometimes??

I don't own a car anymore (just sold it) My entertainment budget is anything let is left per month after my bills. Currently about £200

Are you going to walk everywhere? Change it to "travel" budget.

EDIT:

Also don't assume whatever is left over is entertainment. Monthly expenses never just tally up at the end of the month and now you have entertainment money.
