So I am about to move in an apartment and it has 2 floors. I lived in houses before.

Which floor do you think is better, top or bottom (ground)? Discuss.

TOP. Fight for the top like your life depends on it. I've made that mistake, and fatty arbuckle moved in above me. Major let down hearing him stomp around all the time.

When you say bottom, do you mean on the ground floor? Don't go for that. Trust me, you don't want to have to keep your curtains closed 24/7.

Top. People say you're less likely to get broken into since there are stairs. Plus like others have said, the "noise" factor - you don't want to hear parties, footsteps, sex, screaming kids running around all day/night on the floor above you. Always go with the top. :)

I wouldn't take the highest floor depending on where I live, as it gets hot as hell during summer. I'd say take the second highest floor of the building.

I'm sitting here in my penthouse apartment (fancy word for upstairs). Top absolutely. In addition to what the others said, if there's a plumbing leak or the toilet overflows, stuff goes down. No fun.

And the view is better.

I used to have the second and third floor of a 2 family house. Heat rises, so you do get better heat, you'll never hear feet walking on top of you, no accidental floods in your house (I was super sorry about mine :(), slightly less street noise, better view. The only thing is I was reluctant to use my elliptical upstairs.. would have prefered a ground floor or basement for that one.

Definitely top. You don't want to hear people walking around in the apartment above you and it is harder for someone to break in.

I live on the ground floor... it has its pluses and minuses...

I don't really hear the people above me unless they drop something heavy on the floor and moving in was a breeze (as is getting things like furniture and appliances delivered). it's also a lot cooler in the summer than my old third-floor apartment was.

on the other hand, my curtains are just about always closed and I feel like I have to be a lot more on guard about bugs (had one issue back in June where bugs were swarming my window, attracted by the light at night, but I just got into the habit of closing my windows at night)

I knew where this thread would go, but if it's a place built really well, I'd rather live in the ground floor. It makes moving in and out a lot easier, and if there's stuff to walk to, a pool, etc, it's easier to get to those without always using the stairs. My last apartment was a great place and I lived on the ground floor. My first apartment was the top floor and I hated it (the walls were paper thin, so I heard my next door neighbors but no one above me.)

Bottom: security risk, noisier, BUT moving in is MUCH easier/faster. Also better access to basement facilities (trash, laundry).

<--- Currently lives on a first floor.

Typically the higher you go in an apartment building the more the unit costs.

Here are some pros and cons I have come up with for ground floor living (some may already be listed).

Ground Floor:
+Moving in and moving out is much easier.
+Quick in and out access to the building, can be very helpful in an emergency.
+Unloading groceries is easier.
+Closer to amenities like laundry facilities.
+No noise below you.
+If you have medical problems and no elevators you won't have to climb the stairs.
+Ground floor units are usually the least expensive in the building.
-Your windows are easy to get into for bad guys.
-You have to deal with noise above you.
-You are very visible especially if your unit is off a main street or parking lot.
-If your building has stairs you will hear every person entering or leaving the building.
-If there is a plumbing accident above you it becomes your problem too, pray to god it isn't a toilet.

I lived on the first floor for exactly one year I won't do it again. Some people prefer it. It's all a matter of taste.

If you have concrete walls, it wouldnt matter but then again most places such as duplex were converted, hence the little insulation between walls and floors. I'm on the 3rd floor of a 6 floor building. I can't hear the chick upstairs unless she walks around in high heels. Then again, if there were kids above me, I would probably hate it!
