Finally moved, got a nice place in park slope brooklyn. What a great neighborhood! I see more cute girls in a 5 minute walk than a month in Toronto!

-------------

Short story. Got offered a job in NYC, decided to take it because it seems like it will be an interesting adventure. Will be set up in a furnished apt. in manhattan for a few months until I get on my feet. The office is in the financial district.

After that, where should I live? I'm thinking brooklyn because manhattan seems awfully expensive and full of hipsters/yuppies/trust fund babies. Where in brooklyn is a good place for a 30 yo YP to live? Are there any places I'll definately get murdered? In Toronto I'm pretty OK going to gangland because it's not really too bad, I don't consider anywhere to be a no go, even if i wouldn't live in that neighborhood. Same in NY?

In manhattan Chelsea looks nice. Not too expensive, close to work, few murders. But the internet indicates it's full of the gays. Is it 100% full? Or maybe like 50%? There's an indoor ice rink near there with a men's hockey league. It would be pretty entertaining to dominate (I'm Canadian so naturally amazing at hockey).

No, but I like to live somewhere with women who like men.

You do realize Chelsea isn't surrounded by a moat right? there's an entire CITY out there which is easily accessible via walking/mass transit. Pick a place you like that's affordable to you. Don't worry about which neighborhood is more/less gay. I live in Hell's Kitchen (just north of Chelsea). Arguably the most "gay" neighborhood in the city. I love it and so do the women I bring back to my place. I promise you you won't catch the disease...

I do realize that. Thank you. I like to live in a nice neighborhood and keep it local. A few local dives to kill some time at, a gym, some restaurants, grocery, etc. It is good to hear the neighborhood is inclusive.

Should probably stay in the gay part of town. They'll be more accepting when you say radical things like you went to school and you understand how exponents work.

Hahah take it easy on him guys. Sheesh, typical online insults...

I just moved to NY myself. I live in downtown/financial district where my work is a walking distance.

I don't know if you've ever visited NYC prior. The whole god damn city is a 'local backyard' to you. The train runs 24/7 and so are taxis.

Two train stops, I'm at Chinatown shopping & Little Italy. 3 stops- Japan town & East village. Few more, I'm in Times Square area, and further the whole Central park.

I know you like to stay 'local', but everyone in NY does the same thing- meet all over the city because it's so god damn accessible.

I don't miss driving and parking at all. I LOVE getting fucking hammered with friends and just take the train home.

Oh you're 30? You're around my age. Maybe we should meet up and have gay secks.

Good advice. I have visited about a dozen times. Always for work. Haven't done too much exploring, always taken out by coworkers. So I never really have known where I was. I like the 24/7 trains. In toronto they stop at 1:30am.

If we meet up. I call tops. No reachies.

Just be sure to live near a subway stop. When I was looking, I saw a place in Uppereast that had a station two avenues away.

Avenues (stretching east/west) are fucking long unlike Streets (north/south). I couldn't imagine walking 20 mins EACH on a daily basis. And the place was dead around the apartment (no restaurants, stores, etc).

btw, I love to jog. Walking needlessly nowhere just to commute is a pain in the ass.

The place wasn't cheaper than downtown either. I'm very happy at my current place.

Zeze speaks truth. If you really want to live in a neighborhood with a ton of bars and restaurants my recommendations would be:
Hell's Kitchen
Upper West
East Village
West Village

Note that just about anywhere in Manhattan has a ton of local joints but I find myself frequenting these places the most when i want to go to a different neighborhood; also they're at or near the main subway lines (A-C-E, N-R-W, 1-2-3). Not a big fan of Midtown East or Upper East side as subway access almost always involves a transfer (unless you live near the N) or a walk for a couple of avenues and they're a bit quieter than the aforementioned neighborhoods. Not a fan of the financial district (WTC area) as it mostly only has after work bars and is relatively quiet during the week.

Keep in mind that due to their convenience and popularity, the areas I mentioned are also commensurately more pricey than ones I didn't.

I actually enjoy walking. While i live near a subway, I only have a 20 min walk to work which I enjoy doing every day.

Chelsea is cheap? how much do you make?? I would echo the comments that financial district is pretty empty in the weekends though. And if you want to be surrounded by colorful characters (and maybe to catch some gay) I think east village up to university place is the place to be, also tons of great restaurants that aren't in the bank breaking category as those in Chelsea are.

if you live in brooklyn, stay within brooklyn heights and park slope. venturing north from those area will get you killed.

I can't believe I read the whole thing. Probably the gayest thing I've ever done. Completely uncharacteristically un-heterosexual of me.

I like the sound of this upper west side. Is that where Seinfeld and Kramer live? What is the subway like during rush hour?

You won't live anywhere unless you get a work visa which is hard to get these days. I also don't think moving from one shit hole to another is a good move. Did you make calculations how much this is going to cost you ?

What industry are you going to work in? Despite it not being much warmer, I've contemplated a move to NYC from Toronto as well. Great city.

Plenty of straight people live in Chelsea. A friend of mine just moved there and I think he's paying around $2.8k/month for a 700sqft apt.
