Moving from Texas to Florida. Transporting computer system question.

Hey all. I'm going to be moving from Texas to Florida, and need to take my computer with me. I don't have any cases or anything fancy so I was what the best method would be to move the tower, 20" CRT monitor, and 6.1 speakers without damaging them along the ride, any issues with direct sunlight or anything. I've got a Ford Explorer so room isn't a problem, just like to hear some advice or successful moving stories from you guys.

put it in a cardboard box, if you worried about sun ect, and make sure that it doesnt rattle around to much, otherwise your good....

When I bring my rig to Lan parties, i just strap it into the seat next to me using the seatbelt to secure it, and the other stuff on the floor, water cooling and all, ive had no probs so far...
 
As far as the tower, I always cover mine in plastic and place it between the back of the passenger seat and the front of the backseat. Adjust the seat so it's secured. That way it won't move at all, and is totally safe unless you get hit by another car or something 🙂

I've never moved a monitor in my car so no help there. But I'd try to just fine some sort of box that will hold it and then put some pillows on the sides or something.

 
I've moved my monitor and computer in probably close to 20 times over the years (nothing as long as your trip though) and haven't had any issues.... well... except for one short trip where my case ended up leaning up against the tailgate of a minivan and when I opened it up, it fell over and smashed up the front panel. Everthing else made it out alright though.

I always try to keep a blanket or something else soft wrapped around my monitor and case to prevent scratches and such.

Do you have a really heavy heatsink attached to your motherboard? If you do, it might be a good idea to unattach it for the trip and put it back on when you get there to avoid extra stress on the board and socket.
 
when i'm transporting electronics (computers, stereos, monitors, tvs, etc) i usually use pillows and blankets to keep them safe.. has always worked great 🙂
 
I always put them on their sides, with the mb side down. This helps cards from being shaken loose and minimizes stress on the hsf/mb connection. Packing in boxes with pillows and blankets does work well, but mark "this side up" on them, even if you are the one moving them.

And watch how you stack. Heavy boxes on top can crush even durable boxes under them on a long trip.
 
I successfully transported my computer from Ohio to Texas on the floor behind the front seat. No extra cushioning, though in retrospect I would be more cautious. The monitor was positioned upside down on the rear seat cushion facing the seat back. Used a seatbelt to secure it.
 
Yeah, I usually put mine in the back seat with a seatbelt on it.

I put the case on it side (mobo down). I figure the CPU's HS+F and the gfx card etc won't jostle around much. I don't want my heavy copper HS to "pull" off the mobo.

Carry fragile equipment between the front and rear axles of a vehicle - less jarring. I would arrange the computer so that the mobo side is down and hopefully the hard drives would be vertical, and jam it in place so it can't slide around. If you have a piece of foam (the rubbery kind) to lay it on so much the better. The CRT goes in the footwell of the back seat face down on padding. Then back the front seat to it to lock it in place. That should do it.
. And if you have stop somewhere overnight, I would bring the tempting stuff inside with you. The bastards cruise motel parking lots looking for stuff to steal.
. And CRT televisions should also be carried face down. This keeps the stress minimal on the neck of the CRT which holds the focusing magnet assembly, etc.
. Another thought: When you stop for food, etc. try to find shade to park under - keeps the temp from getting too high in the car. And since the weather is usally pretty humid along the Gulf coast, follow the suggestion of others above and plastic bag your electronics. Plastic garbage bags work fine for that. It also helps to disguise them.
