Moving from Sandy Bridge I3-2100

My brother in law had the same CPU and slightly different board. We decided to purchase a 3770k and after market cooler from ebay for about $170usd.We also upgraded his ram from 4gb to 16gb for under $50usd. His 3770k stock runs games just slightly slower than my I5 6600k and when he overclocks to 4.2ghz it's faster. I think this is the best\cheapest option in your situation. If you want to replace the board/ram/cpu then you should look at the AMD Ryzen 1600 as others have suggested or wait to see if Intel's new CPU's on the 19th push the i7 7700k prices lower.

$220 isn't bad at all for a CPU and memory upgrade.

Agreed. And besides if the OP can upgrade to a 3770K w/ aftermarket HSF and overclock it, while doubling his ram, he should see a huge increase in performance.

thanks to all. decided to spring for the i7-2600 to calm my upgrade fever. I will upgrade video card once this bitcoin fiasco is over and feel i have enough ram at 8GBs at this time but may look at 16GB in the future?

Is 6GB RAM enough? Found noticeable improvement with 6GB instead of 4GB. That's all I can afford.

completed the i7-2600 transition. Also got a new power supply, 8 more gigs of ram, new ssd, and a gtx1060 graphics card. THis will allow me to save more cash and see what happens. I'm happy with the performance increase as well. Thanks to all who posted in this thread and sharing your insights.

No, i3-2130 is Sandy Bridge, i3-3240 is Ivy Bridge. They're similar, but there were some changes.

The i7 2600k 4.7ghz Is faster then Ryzen flagship overclocked to 4 ghz...

I would recommend the OP to just upgrade to an i7 2600k and then eventually upgrade to a new Intel build since they are way better for gaming...

So Ryzen has about 10 to 15 percent better ipc and the 2600k at least the same advantage in clockspeed if overclocked. Basically a wash unless you can use the extra cores for productivity workloads.

OP hope you enjoy the upgrade. Glad you managed to get a GPU that fit your budget since availability of graphics cards has gone insane. If you ever do want to go AM4 someday, take a look at it after they release Ryzen 2/Zen 2 or whatever it is they'll call it. Your new upgrade should last you for a bit.

On a budget the smart thing to do was to get an i7 sandy or ivy and OC which is what he seems to be doing. He's doubled his core and thread count, got a bit more mhz, and imo you can probably game on that cpu nicely with the 1060 at 1080p.

from the little I used, windows 10 install drivers for it and it works for D3D but there is no OpenGL support

I disagree. Why spend good money after bad.

Get a decent B350 or X370 mobo, and at the least, a Ryzen 5 1600 CPU. That's what I did.

Why spend $120 on a 2600K, when you could have Ryzen 5 1600 for $211 right now.
