Moving Files to New Hard Drive

I've tried searching, but had no luck finding anything directly addressing my situation. I have some novice knowledge but just enough to be dangerous if I'm not careful!

My slave hard drive (data, graphics and music) is starting to fail. I have a new Maxtor drive with MaxBlast 3.0 software.
But the manual and the Maxtor site seem to only give instructions for copying O/S and files for a bootable drive. But I only want to copy the contents of the secondary slave hard drive.
I sure this must be possible but I don't want to start until I have some idea of what I'm doing.
I'm also assuming that MaxBlast will do all the necessary formatting before the transfer of files.

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions you can offer.

never ever expect a hard drive utility to do something as important as a format or partion for you. do it yourself. when you have the new drive installed and working, it should show up as something like f or e. on your c option you should have a way to copy the directiories to the new drive
