Moving cross country... how to secure 26ft moving truck?

We have 3 stops from CA to MI, and picked decent sized cities to stop at. Since we're basically moving our entire life and all our possessions, one of the worst things that can happen is to get the truck broken into or worse, stolen altogether.

I'm looking for ways to secure the 26ft moving truck.

I have a Club Steering Wheel Lock (not sure if one size fits all).

I just looked up on Amazon those padlocks w/ a built in alarm siren.

I was also thinking of parking it right outside the room, backed up as far against a wall as possible.

Any other ideas? (other than stop being so paranoid!).

heh-heh...I understand your concern. There's a local motel that is right off a freeway off-ramp...it has a TERRIBLE reputation for u-haul-type trucks getting stolen in the parking lot. Happens a couple of times every year minimum.

As has been discussed before, the Club only slows down the "honest thieves," the rest just cut the steering wheel and get on with the theft. How about removing a critical piece of the ignition system so they can't start the truck?
Obviously, it's best for you if it's a part easy to remove and replace...

Are you that worried someone is gonna steal a 26-foot u-haul truck? Lock the windows, doors and secure the back door with a padlock of some sort.

I moved 1000 miles by myself with a 17-foot truck and no on touched it, if your that worried someone will steal the truck, disable the battery cable.

There are various fuses under the hood that would accomplish this. Fuel pump is a good one. EFI would work too, but then it might run like shit since that often resets the computer on many vehicles. I'd suggest pulling the FP fuse/relay from the block under the hood, and then something from the fuse panel in the cabin - maybe ignition or even the main accessory fuse so none of the dash lights come on? These are just guesses. Never did this with a moving van, but they would certainly disable my car. I doubt many thieves have extra fuses/relays on them.

As far as locking down the back, I've never had to do that. Does the truck rental company offer anything?

Pull the battery out and take it in with you. Disconnecting the battery cable would probably be enough. I doubt many thieves are going to pop the hood and attempt to diagnose a problem if the thing wont start.

Yup, that worried.

I'd be missing all my belongings plus the 25 mexicans I have stashed back there. They're mostly cousins, so I'm pretty close to them.

A thief would not bother to pop the hood and try to figure out why the truck wouldn't start, it would only draw attention to himself. Or you can take the battery with you.

Not sure how much you want to spend, something like this seems like a good deterrent. When i moved, i parked the u-haul right in front where it could be seen from the lobby. Good luck to you.

Major fuse is probably the way to go. But try it out ahead of time since some of the larger fuses are not going to come out easily.

I'll be adding the "pull a fuse" idea to my list... thx for the suggestions.
