- Yes, stuff should be packed.
- Beer and pizza are to be provided
- Don't cancel, It's a real asshole thing to do. Once you've said yes, consider yourself committed (unless there's a true emergency of course). The person moving is probably depending on you.
- Don't expect anything in return beyond the aforementioned food+drink.
- No bitching about how heavy or awkward some shit might be. No one wants to hear it.
- If you know you're so weak as to be more of a hindrance than a help....please don't offer. Don't worry though, as most of your friends won't ask after the first time you've helped out and word has spread...unless you have a truck.

I helped a friend move this past Sunday + last night. I own a pick-up so I know it's coming, I don't really care though. He was quite disorganized and most shit wasn't packed, but we got it all between last night and most of Sunday.

I got two meals + beer out of it though, and he helped me last time I moved, so it's all good.

Any time I move I make sure I have plenty of drinks and always ALWAYS have donuts in the morning (if it is early) and then buy 'em lunch when we are finished.

I helped a couple move today that had understood the unwritten rules. They had a ton of stuff, but everything was in boxes and they had called everybody they knew. We had 10 people, 4 trucks, 3 trailers and a van. We moved a whole house full of stuff in 2.5 hours.

Key words here, "AT THE END". Don't make the same mistake I did, and serve first.
Also, never schedule a move when theres a big game on, (like play-offs, etc.).

I agree with the packing your stuff ahead of time. Most people can live for a week with most of their belongings packed and ready to go. I don't mind breaking down beds, pulling drawers (with clothes in them) out of dressers, taking entertainment centers apart etc but packing dishes, electronics, tools, etc is something the person moving should be doing in their free time a week before the scheduled move.
