Moving a win2k drive to a new system?

I have heard that you can't take an existing drive that has a win2k installation and move that drive into a new computer. Is this true? And if so, doesn't this mess up a lot of backup options? Whats the point of ghosting a hard drive or using RAID as a method of backup if you can't take the hard drive out of a computer that may have crapped out on you and stick it in another to get things up and running again? I guess if it is true, what are some of the easier options to move an installation from one hardware setup to another? On a somewhat related issue, is this going to be something that will carry over to winxp? It just seems like something that can really hinder backup options and all. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

You've heard wrong. I've done it. The correct way would probably be to remove the hardware in Device Manager before moving the drive but to be honest I've never even done that.

I've done what you are asking. Took a hard drive with Win2k and programs out a computer and installed it in another computer. The hardware was completely different. Win2k required 2 reboots and it was ready to go. Never even burped.

I took the HDD from one computer and moved to another, took the boards out of the Device Manager before moving the drive. It worked fine after a couple of reboots.

I've used a ghost image from a CDR from a totally diff HD and puter and threw it at a blank HD in a diff puter and after a few re-boots..its good.
