For me, it has to be "Dark Crystal". I went into it thinking it was a Jim Henson film and ended up getting nightmares for a week(the movie is nothing like the muppets).

I've actually bought it earlier tonight so I could watch it 25 years later to see if I wasn't overthinking things. I was only about 8-9 years old when I saw it but that movie literally scared me to the point of tears.

Anyone else have any movies that terrified you as a child? I'm going to say you had to be less then 10 years old when you saw them.

IT - still hate clowns
Split Second
Alien 3 - there was a time period where I was terrified of open ceiling vents of any kind due to that movie.
Tons of others, I watched a lot of rated R horror movies when i was under 13

Child's Play. Watched a three-part marathon of them late at night in 1st grade, and had a fear of dolls and the dark until ~6th grade as a result. I swear that I'd even see Chuckie peering through my window on occasion and then I'd double take and there would be nothing there. Then I'd go to sleep and have dreams of his return. The Tale of the Crimson Clown, an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark? contributed as well.

Night of the Living Dead (I was like 8 or 9)
Panic in the Year Zero! (this was a Cold War era nuclear apocalypse movie... When you're a very young kid and see movies like these, you get scared that it might actually happen)

Heheh, I watched 'Return of the Living Dead' when I was about 6 or 7, and it scared the bejeez out of me. Of course I grew to love it as one of the great comedies of the past 30 years, but at the time it freaked the hell out of me.

E.T. because the mixing was loud.
Return to OZ. The sanitarium scene and the witch's head showcase were creepy as fuck.

Oh crap, I forgot about return to Oz, that was creepy. Though Fairuza Balk certainly grew up and became extremely hot in the late 90s(see "The Craft" and "Waterboy").

Arachnophobia. I saw it when I was 7, and for the next 10 years I was convinced that anything with 8 legs was instant death. That movie made me so paranoid that I would check under the toilet seat every time I used it. I was convinced they would get me in the shower, or crawl into my shoes, or hats, or food; if I saw a spider anywhere, I would run screaming from the room. And the insomnia from spider-based nightmares? Forget about it. I'm fine with spiders now, but I'm pretty sure that my parents wanted to kill the film-makers for just how much that traumatized me during my formative years. Apparently it's a comedy, but it will always be the most terrifying movie I ever saw.

Jaws was pretty bad too. I would be scared of running into sharks in the deep end of swimming pools. Or my bathtub. It was ridiculous. If I was taking a shower and closed my eyes and got an image of a shark, I'd have to leave the shower immediately. Actually, between being afraid of sharks and spiders getting me while I bathed, I spent a good portion of my childhood extremely filthy. Not much has changed, really...
