Movies that sequel surpassed the original?

Can you name movies that the sequel surpassed the original or the first one IYHO?

Some movies from the top of my head are Terminator 2 was so much better then the original Terminator.

terminator 2 was better than terminator 1. but three looks like crap.
episode 456 were all better by themselves than the first two combined.

Aliens kicked ass on the original Alien. Easily James Cameron's best movie.

I'd say Star Wars. Empire Strikes Back, was, IMHO, quite a bit better than ANH.

I consider Episodes 4, 5 & 6 to be seperate from the newer films completely. Episode 2 definitely owns Episode 1.

I would say though that of the original trilogy "A New Hope" is my least favorite. Other sequels that topped the original would be:

T2
Austin Powers 2 & 3
X2
The Two Towers
Basically any Star Trek film is better than the first with the exception of The Final Frontier
Harry Potter 2
American Pie 2
Aliens

Maybe even Toy Story 2 and Godfather 2

Edit: Almost forgot Superman II and Beverly Hills Cop II

I've liked the X-Men since way before they came to the big screen. The first movie was nice, but lacking action. The second movie blew me away. The only things missing were more Cyke and Gambit's introduction. I can't wait to see the partical effects on his energy charging one day. (X3 PLEASE!)

Empire Strikes Back, Godfather 2, Xmen 2 (HUGE improvement over the original), Die Hard 3 (compared to Die Hard 2, not 1)... Hmm... I happen to be one of the few people that liked Terminator 1 over T2- there was something more raw and frightening about it

Are you dodes too young to remember "Road Warrior"? It was the sequel to "Mad Max." Road Warrior was probably the best movie ever made.

The third one, Beyond Thunderdome was a sad and hideous failure.

aliens -> the dvd version is better than the vhs version -> they added a couple more scenes

The Two Towers, which is amazing considering how great Fellowship of the Ring was.

Return of the Kind looks like it'll be better than both of those combined. Can't wait!
