FightClub - Although I can't say it was hype, because I saw it the day it came out in the theaters and didn't have any expectations going in. I actually thought the movie was pretty good, until the end. Fucking retarded! Seriously, the twist is, a guy inspired people to create a "fight club" by beating himself up. Seriously? SERIOUSLY?!

yeah. It's quite ridiculous when you put the two together.

Like in Adaptation (awesome movie), when the other twin is pitching his screenplay to his brother (the Kaufman character), he describes how the killer is revealed to be one of the multiple personalities of the detective, and during a big chase scene, you have the detective chasing the killer.

Kaufman: Do you realize what you've done? How is that supposed to work? These two guys are chasing each other, but they are the same person. How are you supposed to film that? It doesn't make any sense!!

There were a few parts that were okay, mostly near the beginning, but it got really boring in the middle and end. I could barely follow what was happening even when I was fully awake.

I think the reason film buffs love it is there's a lot of empty time when nothing happens. This makes it appear complex and gives them time to think about how symbolic and thoughtful the director was; in turn, they can also revel in how smart they are for picking up on such things.

I need no further evidence than zin and DominionSeraph's "I'm smarter than you" posturing in this thread.

Not looking for agreement. I know I have little of that here about those movies. My point is only that I thought those were bad movies for a variety of reasons. Obviously I am in massive disagreement with the status quo. Sue me. I do have my reasons, and I have watched a shit ton of films in my life from nearly ever country, and every year cinema has been around, and every genre, so I have a pretty good basis of comparison. And it's not like I hate all those films, or can't appreciate aspects of them. Some of them even have top notch aspects, and sometimes that's what bugs me the most, but none of those films came remotely close to the hype over them, or did anything like live up to expectations based on popularity and reviews, not for me. I am also a very harsh critic, and demand near perfection, so you don't see middle range reviews from me. It's either loved it of hated it in the vast majority of cases. Luckily for people like me (and I am not alone) so many movies get made that there will always be plenty enough good stuff for me not to waste too much time on the stuff I don't like.

As far as Irr and EtV go. I saw EtV first and I thought EXACTLY the same thing, probably worse. Sophomoric, moronic, trite, pretentious, film school grade drivel. About the only thing I liked was the CGI DMT trip, which was quite accurate, and in my opinion one of the very few good uses of current CGI. So I watched it all the way through to see if there was anything else to it. I found it, but only after the film slithered through my noggin for some time and I watched it again, then again, then again. There is an intricate nearly holographic quality to that film I still can't put my finger on, but there is much more to that onion than the skin.

Did you really watch Irreversible at all? I found nothing about that film pretentious in the slightest bit. On the contrary it was probably one of the most visceral, and truly horrifying films I have ever seen. Again, a hidden layer of complexity seeps through. Very terrific!

Yes, I've seen a handful of decent japanese anime--the Miyazaki films come to mind--though even those start off spectacularly, but by the third act collapse under their own weight as they have no idea how to finish. So, I love plenty of animated films, I think it is a fine vehicle for story telling. I do use cartoons as a disparaging term, because there is a lot out there that is held out to be high-brow when it really is low-rent.

Ahh.. come on, you know there are a lot of people who think Michael Bay is the greatest director ever.

I wholeheartedly agree, that there are a lot more turds than good movies, but that is what movie are.. in general everywhere in the world are. A lot of low brow crap, with occasional marvels. Yes, most Japanese anime is juvenile, but that does not mean all animes are to be discarded. It is not just about animes.. but animation in general.. even the french do an amazing job at that.

We both agree that MB is among the worst directors ever, but you think Transformers is just about fighting robots.. where as I was disappointed in the way MB handled the whole series(I was actually pretty confident that he will mess it up, but never.. in my wildest dreams.. thought that Transformers can be made in such a pathetic manner.
 
Cannot believe The Matrix was not mentioned yet. Most overrated, hyped garbage in decades. The sequels just get worse.

Most watchers of only newer films are not going to notice that almost everything they have ever watched in dramatic film is contained in six movies, Metropolis, The Wizard of Oz, Birth of a Nation, Citizen Kane, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and M.

Ink is not hipster in the least. It doesn't try, it succeeds. You just cannot watch it like a normal American retard, expecting everything to be spelled out for you in the movie. If you sift through the minutia looking for the big picture, you're not going to have a clue what's going on.

Ink banks heavily on Christian mythology to construct its world. If you cannot see the similarities and transfer the appropriate memes over, you're going to be lost. The world will look shallow and confusing and pointless, and the acting within the world will look to hang on nothing.

You don't have to look for any deeper meaning. Its so heavy handed that there's nothing to look deeper for. You act like it takes much knowledge or thought to understand it, but it just doesn't.

Its poor rehashing wrapped over mediocre movie-making.

I loved Gladiator for the vengeance / justice and the epic score...not so much for the gore. I actually didn't like Braveheart or 300.

Odd, never met anyone that like Gladiator but not Braveheart. Hans Zimmer does make epic sound tracks however.

It was mostly the villain that I couldn't stand in Braveheart. It was way too over-the-top to be believable. Like a cartoon or caricature.

Almost as bad as the villain in Waterworld.

There's a few Westerns I like, but most I don't like indeed. Often horrible acting, the story sucks, and it's pretty much always a copy of the standard Western.

What annoys the hell out of me with Spiderman is the whiny little bitch Spiderman is most of the time. The bad guys are always more likable than Spiderman in those movies.
I like many movies based on comics, but I don't like a 'superhero' whining about how hard life is unless it's more comical than drama (like with Wolverine).

Edit: I'm not looking forward much to Captain America as I always thought he was too 'weak' to do anything in the comics. I strongly preferred the Punisher, as I don't believe in giving the worst of the worst criminals the chance to escape, to be let loose due to lack of evidence, or to be given the chance to continue from prison in whatever way. Captain America would attack the Punisher on sight eventhough the Punisher was willing to talk first.

not that it was a bad movie, but I will never understand the absolute love that people have for that movie. I don't see anything in it that ranks it higher than every other generic feel-good movie out there.

The first was a classic for sure. Not the best movie ever, but iconic and deservedly so.

The 2nd was an okay action film, but way below par compared to the first, and as a stand-alone film has no real beginning or end.

The 3rd was just atrocious.
