Movies stuttering and out of sync on dual PC / TV setup

hi guys,

I have a media pc which is connected via hdmi to the tv. It's a fairly fast pc and more than adequate to handle hi-res videos. When I play a movie on a duplicate setup in 1080p, using various players, such as VLC, Media player classic or XBMC, it plays perfectly on the monitor, but it's audio is out of sync on the tv and also is somewhat stuttering as though it can't keep up.

I think it's something to do with the monitor and tv's refresh rates not matching, but don't know how best to set it up correctly so that the tv takes priority.

FYI, I have a:-
Sony Bravia 46" EX503 - 1080p @ 100Hz
HP Pavillion Monitor - 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz
PC is running Windows 8 64Bit and the movies have been tried with VLC, Media player classic and XBMC

Could anyone please advise? Thank you

I dont know much about HTPC's, but if I had to guess it sounds like a codec problem.

Two things come to mind.
1) Check the refresh rate of the monitor as its set in Windows. My experience is that Windows chooses 60hz on everything and you need to change the frequency yourself.

but

2) If the refresh rate is different on the 2 monitors already then you may have one of two possible problems:
a) You have an Nvidia card and the TV is the secondary. For some reason some of us get poor performance on the second monitor. Its somewhat improved in Windows 8.1 but its basically a bug that Nvidia hasn't fixed for well over 1.5 years now.
b) The difference in refresh rate is causing pullup cadence issues and all the programs are detecting which scheme to use on one monitor and then when displayed on the other it has issues.

Thanks very much guys.

It's not the codecs as I've updated these recently. The monitor is running at 60Hz, but the TV is on 59Hz...what should I choose for the TV?

Ah the old 59.97 verses exactly 60hz issue. I don't know how to fix it. Struggled with 59.97 hz issues for years on a few 2443BW monitors from Samsung and had the same problem, I thought it was a relic of history.

I think I have found the problem!

The monitor cannot be adjusted and in always at 60Hz, but in the intel display options in windows, I managed to change the TV's refresh rate to 24Hz! This has forced the TV to run @ 1080p/24 and has stopped all stuttering :)

The other option is XBMC has a setting to re-encode the audio on the fly to match the video framerate.

Personally I always prefer the 24p option.

Thank you very much, will check it out.

I know this is a bit off-topic, but since you seem to know about xbmc:-

I have xbmc gotham 13.2. For some reason xbmc is in window mode and won't switch to fullscreen. I have tried to change this, but it reverts back to window mode.

Does anyone know where this setting is stored in the xbmc files, so that I can manually force it?

Thanks.

Uncheck the true full screen setting under video options:

That's exactly the setting I've been trying to change but I I've accidently made the xbmc folder read-only and need to know which file is holding the video display output settings?

GOOD NEWS! I've fixed it!

All I had to do is choose the "reset to default" option at the bottom and that's it!

Thank you for your time poofyhairguy...your a star!
