movie industry suing people for illegal downloading

my local paper (Sacramento Bee) printed a story today about how the film industry is going to start suing people for downloading illegally, like the music industry.
anyone know how theyre going to find people? the article mentioned the software that was mentioned on ATOT a few days ago, where you can scan your hard drive to find and report illegal files.

is bittorrent safe?

BT is not safe... the problem is the people they are suing wont solve the problem... the only way to hurt piracy is get the release groups and they keep themselves protected.

yes it's safe but you have to upload as fast as you can. If you upload fast enough, they'll be too slow to catch you

Actually, offering legitmate services worthy of my hard-earned money is what will do it if anything..that or a police state.

Look at itunes. I know drows of people who used to pirate music who now gladly pay for it via itunes.

The problem is that most of the the people running the show for these antagonistic companies are greedy little bitches, not to mention close-minded fools.

The ones who hit it big are the smart business men that realize that people WILL pay if they feel that they are getting their money's worth.

As far as I know, iTunes is a loss for Apple and it only helps to sell more iPods.

So the movie studios should start making DVD players? That's just stupid.

That was not my point. I was just informing him that apple has manged to profit from, altough indirectly, selling legal music downloads.

I did not mean that their itunes busness model was profitable and is the be all of the entertainment industry as it needs the ipod. I was merely attempting to point out the fact that people WILL buy if the price and the enviroment is right.

My point was that the price is NOT right from a business standpoint for the movie studios and that iTunes is a bad example for this because it is a loss for Apple without the iPod.

I too would sue if people were stealing my work product.

The sense of entitlement in this country is simply amazing to me.

Somehow I don't think the little people in the film industry are going to see a penny of the settlements.

😕

Why would they? The companies own the rights (generally) to the fims.

Bittorrent was never safe to begin with.

Use a good firewall
You still are not safe. We have a list of people here on campus who have been caught using everything from Kazaa to bittorrent

Sueing a bunch of poor people isn't going to solve their "problem".
It's just going to make a lot of people dislike their already poor product more.

These threads are all the same, and you sound like a broken record in them.
I like how you never acknowledge that the idea of fair usage rights are being silently thrown out the door.

I don't see how "fair use" has any point in a thread about the blatant piracy of movies.

If the thread title was "F*** the MPAA/RIAA and the stupid laws that make it illegal to break CSS encryption to have an HD archive of my DVDs, and the copy protections etc..." then sure, you could raise a point about the defense of fair use.
