Movie Gallery, Inc. (Nasdaq: MOVI) today announced that it plans to close approximately 520 underperforming and unprofitable Movie Gallery and Hollywood Video stores. As previously announced, the Company has been accelerating its efforts to conserve cash and reduce the Company's cost structure to address the financial and industry challenges it has been experiencing.

Joe Malugen, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Movie Gallery, said, "Closing these stores was a difficult, but necessary decision to help protect the future of this Company. These stores are being closed after evaluating a number of factors, including store profits and the terms of the leases at each location. This action will allow us to focus our resources on the approximate 4,000 stores that have a stronger operating performance and prospects for future growth.

We thank our many associates and partners who have remained loyal to us over the years," continued Malugen. "Where possible we will work with the customers at these locations to transfer their accounts to other nearby Movie Gallery and Hollywood Video locations. The talented associates and partners in the stores that will be closing have been notified. As always, we remain committed to treating all affected employees fairly and providing the necessary assistance to make this transition as smooth as possible"

Movie Gallery has retained an outside professional services firm, the Great American Group, to assist it in conducting sales of the inventory at the closing stores.

All items in store will be drastically reduced starting Thursday, September 27, 2007. Some stores may be closed on Wednesday to prepare for the liquidation.

There is no official list of what stores are closing, if you have one near you, go by and see. YMMV - BM only.

movie gallery bought out the local guy a year or so ago and jacked the prices.

If they close that will be just fine.

Anyone know if this includes Game Crazys that are attached to Hollywood Video?
If so there may be some hot deals to be had.
I'll have to check out the local stores tomorrow.

Well, there appears to be some bad news. According to my friendly neighborhood Hollywood Video folks, all the PS3 and 360 games are to be sent back to corporate, presumably for redistribution to the stores that aren't closing.

Having said that, everything was 20% off "current" pricing, with most new release movies priced at $14.99 before the discount, so there might be a few deals to be had. Lots of the older stuff at the one I went to was $9.99 minus the discount. Supposedly it's going to be your standard increase-the-discount-each-week-until-we-close plan.

One twist to the deal is that a lot of the items for sale are actually still out on rental to people, so if you want something popular, it might actually not make it back to the store until after the next round of markdowns, which could be a good thing.

Agreed, I will enjoy becoming a vulture feasting upon the corpse of Movie Gallery if the one locally closes. One of their clerks failed to scan a video in when it was returned and the I got billed for being a week late when they finally discovered it and scanned it in.

You could try using the store locater. If the store near you is not listed it might be closing. The one be me is not listed.

I just called them and they did confirm that they are closing.

So it does seem that if your store is not listed it is probably closing
