Movie franchises that I'm surprised never got a 3rd installment

it's not too late.

after all, they're coming out w/independance day II, and jurassic park IV.

from yourlist, i'm surprised at no Escape from New Orleans for the trilogy

When is the 3rd installment good?

Spiderman 3
X-Men 3
Iron Man 3
Godfather 3
Superman 3

They go down the drain fast, once producers and studio execs take over creative control.

Good ones, Ghostbusters especially should have easily had a third.

Aren't they making a 3rd?

Surprising they didn't back then, but I think the 2nd one kinda filled that role. You could tell they kinda half-assed it (hell they kinda joke about it being over in the movie itself since they're playing kids birthday parties)

Eh Iron-Man 2 was crap so it doesn't belong. The others, at least the sequel was as good if not better than the first.

Most sequels suck, and it's no surprise.

For most 'heroes' the only good, accessible plotline is the origin story.

For most adventure/quest movies, 'doing it again' simply seems contrived (Think Speed 2).

By the time you get to a threequel, you're usually introducing some idiotic, gimmicky child-character who doesn't add anything and everything gets even more contrived.

On the other hand, 6Fast 6Furious is out now, and I love the naming scheme.

I don't think that the sequels suck; they're just not necessarily as good as or better than the original. That's what everyone always measures the sequels by, rather than measuring them on their own.

Wayne's World
Ace Ventura
Under Siege
Short Circuit
Escape from NY/LA

Wayne's World Gross = 121m on 20m budget (domestic, counting overseas, 183m)
Wayne's World 2 Gross = 48m on 40m budget (no int'l numbers I could find)

That should explain why a third was never made. But, now that Myers and Carvey have kind of made up, it's getting ripe for a third installment for nostalgia purposes.

Jim Carey was under contract for the two Ace Ventura's and it seems he didn't like the script for the second one. WNC is the only sequel Carey has ever done so it seems he wants to stay far away from doing the same thing twice and who can blame him?

Under Seige - Really? This makes your list? The first one wasn't bad but the second was a train wreck.

Short Circuit - At a combined gross of $60m for both movies, this was never a real "hit". Having said that, it's ripe for a reboot. Has everything you need to be successful in today's market.

I see what you did there.

:awe:

Lot of rumours but still up in the air. Technically Ghostbusters: The Video Game is the third movie. Ties up the Ivo Shandor storyline from the first film.

I'm not going to believe in Ghostbusters 3 until at least 2 months after it's been out on Blu-Ray. That project has been on-off-on-off-on-off dozens of times over the last 20 years and it's been confirmed to be greenlit with specific actors and then a week later confirmed to be cancelled. First there's an approved script, then there's supposedly a whole new team developing a completely different script. Murray is in, then Murray is out, then Murray is on the fence. The whole idea has been haunted from day one.
