Movie: Dont look up

You can't really say you're disappointed with the movie if you turned it off halfway. The movie just gets better and better probably starting right at the halfway point. I nearly turned it off myself like 30 mins in because I was like WTF is this shit? Then I slowly realized what it was getting at cause i had no clue it was doing what it was doing, prior to watching it. And by the end I was flat out LOL'ing at stuff.

I'll give it another try-but it so far the points it is trying to make are being sledgehammered IMO, no subtleness involved. So far I'd put it on a 2 o3 on a 10 scale. Perhaps I'm being overly harsh because the movie I watched just before this one was a truly great one also starring DiCaprio - Shutter Island.

If nothing else I can fast forward through to the end credits and watch the easter egg.

the easter egg wont make any sense useless you watch the entire move, its an in movie joke.

The movie was tragically hilarious, just like real life.

I've brought it up before, but the world and its societies are actually starting the long decline of collapse right now, but just like in the movie, everyone looks around, sees things pretty much the same as they were 5 years ago, and just ignores the coming collapse.

Don't Look Up is Idiocracy for 2021.

It's a well put together movie.

A parody that is real life. Sad, funny at times and depressing. Watching this movie is just like the country looking at itself in the mirror.

You must realize the fact this country looks so much like the movie people are not capable of subtle.

I like how the movie doesn't make a single reference to liberals or conservatives but even conservatives know it is making fun of them. They all know they are walking talking caricatures of themselves but are still incapable of stopping.

Watched it with my Fiancée last weekend. We both loved it, but it was rather close to the way US politics, the media, big tech, and social networking operate. A worst case scenario of how things could actually play out. A modern day Idiocracy.

Eh, RT is hardly the end all be all. Matrix 4 is at 64% fresh and that was barely watchable.

Just look at their top 100. Takes a lot of subjectivity and forces it hard into objectivity.

The underlying theme among virtually ALL the bad reviews is the movie hits too close to home for people's pet science denialism and they see that as "arrogant" and "preachy."

It also REALLY lampoons the press itself and the press sees THAT as arrogant and "preachy."

And there is a LOT of science denialism out there. From irrational GMO fearmongering to "Organic" food scams, to chemophobia, to al-med, to radio wave fears, to homeopathy, to AIDS denialism, to COVID denialism, to anti-vax, to climate change denial.

This movie, while aimed at the current right-wing gives a sucker punch to many left wing science denialists as well.

Good. Fuck all of them.

On the flip side, it shows the (in)ability of science to present it's findings as absolutely ham-fisted. And I am sure that pisses off more than it's fair share of so-called science communicators.

And finally, it REALLY hits the press as vapid and entertainment oriented rather than information oriented. So now that very same press is giving it a bad review???

Absolutely. Not all, but most of the negative reviews have a pretty pungent odor of "this movie hurt my feels."

Saw this last night with someone. We both were cracking up at loud at the first half. It was just funny commentary about so many aspects of society today that are ridiculous. The movie lost a bit of steam in the second half and there were a couple parts that tried too hard to go along with some other quality moments, but overall a good movie. Ending was perfect. The first half was laugh out loud funny though.

It makes me sad to say so, but in the current state of our country...I think reality would play out closer to the way that 'Don't Look Up' did, as opposed to the expected societal reaction in 'Deep Impact' (1998). It might not be subtle, but the movie doesn't portray a ridiculous and false narrative, either.
