Movie clips on comp

I haven't done anything with movies on my computer, and was wondering if there is a way to get clips of different movie scenes for a class project I'm doing. My dad's laptop has a dvd player, and I have heard of people who rip dvd's. What do I need to rip the dvd's, then edit out the clips I want? Any advice or links are appreciated.
