Movie: Children of Men

I just got back from seeing it and I give it 10 thumbs up. The movie is definitely recommended from not only me but from critics (93%) and users (90%). A superb movie with amazing action and impressive camera shots. I'm not a film efficianado but I found myself noticing the amazing camera work in the movie. One scene, in particular, involved a very fast paced action sequence that lasted anywhere from 10-15mins that was all 1 continuous camera shot! Highly recommended!

The trailer also used Muse's Map of the Problematique. Too bad it's a very limited release. Most of my nearby theatres aren't showing it.

Err yeah, that's the song I was thinking of... no idea how I mixed them up when Map of the Problematique is my favorite song off that album (by far). Probably because my sister called it Knights of Cydonia one time when she was talking to me 😛. Yeah that's it... blame it on the sibling!

I'm downloading the trailer just so I can solidify the fact that I got it wrong 😉. Although I have to say, the politicalness of Black Holes and Revelations is kind of annoying at times. Simply does not beat out Origins of Symmetry as their top album.

EDIT: Fixed the CD title... I always call it by the wrong name.

I am going to make it my agenda to see this. I live in SoCal, it shouldn't be that hard to find a showing.
My only personal quibble is the title. I am picturing the movie Junior.

It's overrated. In between all the fancy gimmicks, they forgot to give viewers a complete story.

From what I've seen in the film and read online it was intentional. And the biggest hole in the plot is better left alone...Would it have made it better if they explained why the women have become infertile? It's a movie set in a dystopian future and from the films I've seen it's just as good to leave how they got there unexplained as it is to give a reason. The way the movie is now it leaves a lot open for interpretation and discussion. I personally enjoy it when a film leaves you to make your own conclusions upon it.

You're all thumbs? 😛

I want to see this flick, but is it big-screen worthy, or should I wait for the DVD?

Yup. It's a MacGuffin.

What was in the trunk in Repo Man? Doesn't matter.
What was in the brief case in Pulp Fiction? Doesn't matter.
Why are all the women infertile in Children of Men? Doesn't matter.

Yes, it seems like a very good idea not to mention the reason for the infertility. For one thing it is not important to the plot of the movie. Even more importantly, whatever you choose people are goign to think you are trying to make some sort of point which really is not your goal. Like if you choose polution people are gonna think the movie has an enviromentalist slant, if you choose genetic engineering people are going to think your are trying to oppose that, if you choose nucear fallout people are gonna think its anti nucelar, etc... And if you try to make some bogus science explanation all the nerds (esp. on this forum) are gonna be complaining about how the explanation is nto scientifically possible. I personally think it was a very prudent descision to leave this detail out as it would hinder the overall effectiveness if everyone is questioning the reason isntead of actually thinkgin about what the movie wants you to.

My friends and I were looking for a movie to watch last week. Without many good choices, I thought the Children of Men trailer was pretty interesting (I've never heard of the movie before that point). The plot line, as explained by IMDB, actually sounds pretty silly:

"In 2027, in a chaotic world in which humans can no longer procreate, a former activist agrees to help transport a miraculously pregnant woman to a sanctuary at sea, where her child's birth may help scientists save the future of humankind."

My friends thought so too, but I showed them the trailer and they agreed it sounded interesting. I thought the movie was well filmed, but was just OK overall. I liked that the viewer wasn't all-knowing and the movie didn't try to solve all of the world's problems; it was just a glimpse of Clive Owen's life. All of my friends, however, hated it and were blaming me for recommending it. :-/ But I should have expected as much: one of them was too busy text messaging to pay attention, another one prefers movies with Hilary Duff, and the rest hate every movie they see.

saw it last night. damn that movie was a lot more violent than I thought it would be. but that jsut makes it better 🙂

edit: pull my finger, pull my finger...again

Was definitely a great movie, maybe worthy of an oscar nomination, but I wouldn't be real disappointed if it wasn't nominated. Like people said it didn't explain much, but apparently it was intentional. Very entertaining and realistic...somewhat.

Yes, it does matter. Why are they infertile? Who is the Human Project? These are things that drive the characters and story, and the audience needs to know what's going on. I can't enjoy a film if I'm just leaving confused because the director decided to be artsy-fartsy and not explain things to viewers as if that makes the movie better.

Between the promising director and the great reviews, I've been anxiously waiting for this movie to release since I first saw the trailer. I'm going to the 10:20 showing tonight with a bunch of my friends, should be good.
