so i just moved to san jose / fremont. which is a good bank to use around here with free checking? good global geographic branches would be a plus.

Free checking? I'm not sure. I have wells fargo free checking/100 free stock trades etc but you have to have a balance of over 25k for it.
Edit - WF has free checking but you need to have dd. They do nickel and dime you on everything. But then so do all the other banks. You might have better luck and service with a credit union.

I thought free checking was pretty standard these days. Think all the banks in my area offer it, but this is a college town.

Why be a customer and pay retail, when you can be an owner and get better rates and service?
Used to be for Pacific Bell Telephone employees and their families, but now available to all.

Screw the banks, join a credit union. I don't understand why more people don't do this and why they keep feeding these big banks all their rediculous fees.

I use a community bank. 😉

Much better customer service IMO.

edit: Than the big banks at least. I've never been a member of a credit union.

i dont have any fees with boa. well, i set up overdraft to hit my savings, and i think thats like a couple of bucks or something, ive only done it once so i dont remember

and boa is everywhere-ish

I use a BofA checking account to use my debit card/write rent checks out of/etc. I think it's their "Access" checking, as long as you have a direct deposit every month you don't get charged the monthly fee. No minimums required.

they do.

since Wells Fargo just bought Wachovia, they are now very widespread. Go with them or BoA. both are all over the place.

I have Wamu which is now Chase.

yeah, this too. I moved out here a few months before that happened, and had to switch from Chase b/c they were non-existent on the West Coast. Then, two months later....FML.

I dumped my employee-only credit Union years ago b/c the rates sucked ass compared to what you can get through ING, with no minimum whatsoever. My rate at ING was ~6.3% when I signed on in 2004, iirc. minimum of 1$ in your account. It's way down now, but so is everybody.

I hadn't seen many credit unions offer better than 2%, but then I haven't looked in some time.

Wells Fargo

If I lived in California, I'd probably only consider WFC.

any particular reason why?

I've been with wamu for awhile but just have really basic checking and a basic savings account and their terms/conditions seem sorta silly now (have to auto deposit from checking to savings every month, if i over draw checking they pull from savings but charge me at least 25 for the privilege). Since they are turning into (or they are now) chase and I've been thinking about switching I've been wondering who to go with.

I don't understand why more people can't spell "ridiculous".

FBB - ING Direct

ING is great for savings, but terrible for checking. Sure, they don't charge to use other bank's ATMs, but the bank that owns the ATM mroe than likely will.

Considering ING owns maybe 6 ATMs across the country, I would not recommend this. Chase is popping up quickly in the Bay area due to buying out WaMu. They will absolutely GAUGE you when it comes to fees.

Every Exxon station in Houston has free ATM for ING, plus either Walgreen's or CVS (can't remember which one).
