long story short, i used to live with a roomate for a few years. moved out of there because i didnt want/need a roomate anymore. back then i was using a memory foam mattress i picked up from costco. it was pretty comfortable and for the most part i slept good(although it sucked for everything other than sleeping). moved back home with my parents for about a month and slept in my old room with a spring mattress. i slept beautifully in that thing and wouldnt wake up until noon on my off days.

so a month later i moved into my new place. its a 1br apartment and i live alone. bought another memory foam mattress this time with inflatable airbags and what a terrible mattress it was. tried sleeping in it 2 nights and it was impossible. i slept maybe an hour a night on it, the rest of the time i was tossing and turning. so i figure i cant sleep in that thing, get rid of it and bought a serta spring mattress. same thing happened, its more comfortable but i just cant sleep in the fucking thing. i cant even sleep on the cough in the living room either.

i dont know whats wrong, yesterday evening for example i was dead tired due to lack of sleep the previous days and i went to bed around 10:30. although i was tired, i could NOT sleep. i dont know whats wrong. i know if i slept at my parents house this wouldnt be an issue. i dont know if its the bed, the fact that i live alone now, my diet(although nothing has changed) etc...

Ive tried drinking milk before i go to sleep, sleeping aid pills(they got my eyes tired for about a half hour then wore off). buying those night shades so you dont see any light, nothing seems to work. I had my dad come over and lay in my bed to see if he thought it was uncomfortable and he said no. anyone have any tips for me, this is pretty frustrating.

the one thing i havent tried is exercise, although i will try this out tonight. i dont normally exercise but have decided recently i will start doing so on a regular basis as i feek out of shape.

thanks

You moved from one place with a roommate to another with no roommate. You might just be having a difficult time mentally falling asleep.

Do you sleep with any sort of white noise? If not, try a fan.

I can't sleep without some sort of white noise. You may have gotten used to the background noise of having a roommate and now it is too quiet.

While I can sleep both with and without white noise, it does seem to help, and the first night when I turn off white noise (i.e. at the end of the summer when I stop using the fan), I have trouble getting to sleep.

If your apartment has central air, switch the fan part to on. I have to do this once in a while. Sometimes it is just too quiet.
Another thing I do is if I am laying there and just thinking about stuff I get up and write it all down, seems to quiet my thoughts.

You really need to give a new bed/mattress 30 days for your body to adjust. Without doing that, you'll never know if you just returned what could have been the best possible mattress for you. True, those 30 days might suck. But, you really do need time to adjust your sleeping positions to the new mattress.

White noise as mentioned above helps a lot. So does having a comfortable but slightly cool temperature (most people won't fall asleep until their body cools a bit). I like a little air flow over me for some reason that I can't explain. A fan solves all three at the same time for me.

Don't do anything that is too taxing (mentally or physically) in the hour before bed. If your heart is racing and/or your mind is racing, it can be really hard to sleep. Use that last hour to calm your body. Exercise and "activities" mentioned in this thread are great, but do it 1 hour before you want to be asleep. Don't do homework or study or anything mentally taxing either - or you probably won't be able to stop thinking long enough to sleep.

But the biggest thing, is just don't muck with your sleep schedule. No matter what happened yesterday or what will happen tomorrow, go to bed at your normal time and wake up at your normal time. Your body will get used to it quite quickly if those times don't change. This means you have to end staying up/sleeping in on weekends (at least until you can sleep well again).

You're probably not adjusted to the new setting - maybe it's a bit lonely without a roommate or parents around?

Definitely start exercising though. I find even a moderate session in the evening a few hours before bed-time will help me conk out solidly.

I'm not superstitious or anything, but are you sleeping with your head in the same direction as before? I know it sounds stupid, but I have always slept with my head facing West. Went throught the same thing when I moved to college, then to an apartment, then to my house I have now. That's all the professional advice I can offer based off of my gigantic study of 1 person.
