Moved from Timecard to Punch clock

I was working flexible hours 8-5 on a timecard. Where I write down when I came in and left, I was told to always make it the same, so it was like I was on salary. I just got on the job a couple weeks ago, and now they switch my position over to the time clock. You would think it would still be flexible, and that I just need to put in 8 hours ... when ever.

How does Kronos round employee punches?

If the employee has a schedule, then...
Punching in:
--Any punch within 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start time will round to the scheduled start time. For example, if an employee is scheduled to begin work at 8:00 am, any punch between 7:30 am - 7:59 am will round to 8:00 am.

--All other punches will round to the tenth of an hour (6 minutes) and will include a 3 minute grace. For example, if an employee is scheduled to begin work at 8:00 am, any punch between 8:01 am - 8:03 am will round back to 8:00am. Any punch between 8:04 am - 8:05 am will round forward to 8:06 am.

Punching out:
--Any punch within 30 minutes after the scheduled end time will round to the scheduled end time. For example, if an employee is scheduled to end work at 4:00 pm, any punch between 4:01 pm - 4:30 pm will round to 4:00 pm.

--All other punches will round to the tenth of an hour (6 minutes) and will include a 3 minute grace. For example, if an employee is scheduled to end work at 4:00 pm, any punch between 3:55 pm - 3:57 pm will round back to 3:54 pm. Any punch between 3:58 pm - 3:59 pm will round forward to 4:00 pm.

This rounding doesn't seem fair to me at all. I really enjoyed the flexibility I got with the time card, being able to adjust my time when it was most needed. Now I have to micromanage to make sure I can get my 40 hours, without giving "the man" more time that he isn't paying me for.

Cliffs:
-Was on timecard/salary pay
-Changed to punching in/time clock
-The rounding is retarded
-I'm pissed

That rounding thing blows!

We almost went to a timeclock at my job but at the last minute they realized that on average people worked longer than they accounted for. Had we switched they'd be paying more OT.

That could be illegal- check your state Labor laws and Let your manager know. If he cfhooses to ignore your input and it still pisses you off, forward the email to your favorite State labor dept representative.

you have a few options:

1- quit and work somewhere else
2- contact the dept. of labor for your state and ask them to review the policy and see if it meets state & federal guidelines
3- keep neffing on ATOT and get an ulcer from the stress of your unfair situation

That's the way it works at many companies. Certainly both I have worked for. Not sure about the 30 minutes rounding...but all the other ones yes

aah.. stop bitchin.. you have a job at least.. (i'm sure someone on unemployment would be glad to hold your position)

Put in the 40 hours / 8 hrs/day that you are supposed to and stop wasting resources and bitching about it by posting to Anandtech, when you should be working 🙂

That was my thinking! My small attemt to stick it to the man

wow..that sounds really terrible.

I was told on my 2nd day (this is my 2nd official week) that every minute counts. So I start work at 8..but I get here by 7:56 every morning..that's at least 4 more minutes added to OT. Then at 5..if i stay til like..5:06..that's 6 minutes added to OT. So as long as all that extra time adds up to at least 15minutes total by the end of the week...that's 15mins OT on top of my regular 40.

I guess I got lucky with my company.

I'm reasonably certain that the massive rounding would not be legal for hourly employees. An employee who stays late but for less than 30 minutes would be cheated out of overtime.

And Kronos can do whatever you tell it to - that rounding was programmed into your company's system based on what your company wanted the system to do. Why your company would want such a strict system is the real question.

Did they feel people were abusing the old "honor system"? You might want to ask how people can be exempted from the list of employees on a schedule - that way your Kronos record will record actual start/end times, and your overtime should be accurate.

If you are truly an hourly employee that rounding system is pure BS.

kranky is dead on (as usual) about Kronos, the company that I worked for that used Kronos recorded punches to the minute, with a 5 min grace period at the start/end of shifts. Daily times were recorded as decimals with accuracy to 100ths, & final pay was rounded up to the nearest 1/4 hour.

Definately check this out to see if it's legal. Rounding up to an entire half hour seems a bit excessive. Although maybe you can still punch in early then go on ATOT until your regualarly scheduled start time. 🙂

here is what you do, spend the last 5 mins of each day WAITING to punch out, it may add up quick and your employeer may change it

or leave jobs completely open and undone at 3:59 because anytime after that they are not paying you to work

i believe we have kronos at our work and it shows the exact minute we punch in and out if you use the F1-F4 keys

i would also assume that no one is making over time either

it seems that no matter how much you work over your scheduled time it gets rounded down

My firm works that way too. We were on a paper system, but now we're using an ADP clock program. We don't have any of that rounding bullsh!t though. ADP is accurate to .01 hours: 36 seconds.

Side Note: My office is literally surrounded by Kronos - they're to the left, right, and across the street! They moved their headquarters to Chelmsford, MA about 6 years ago I think.

i honestly would leave stuff half done, if i was in the middle of something at 4

and if they bitched i would tell them i am not going to be working if i am not being payed

Only the punching out section seems to be bs. I find the problem with such horrible rounding is that people will rush to the punch clock at their end of the shift. They will do a poor quality job or do no work for the last 5-10 minutes of work just because they clearly know they will not be paid for any extra minutes spent. They want to time themselves so that they can make it to the clock on time.

Fvck the company. If that's their policy on time it tells you a lot about company-employee relations. I'd be looking for another place of employment. Unless of course you find the policy is illegal, then you have some options, but still do you want to work for a place that has such policies?

Good luck.
