Both seem capable and have free versions available. Any advice on these or other blogging packages is appreciated.

MT is not free now.. so I guess that makes a big difference 🙁

and if it matters to OP, MT is based on Perl, while Wordpress is based on PHP. The last time I used MT was v2.xxx two summers ago though.. I recently gave Wordpress a spin and it just 'feels' right. 🙂 I still like textpattern for stuff other than blogging though!

Edit: Hmmm MT does have a limited version for free
