Move to Phoenix

Well to make a long story short my company moved me to IL almost a year ago (well a year in Feb) and they are planning to send me to either phoenix or Syracuse but phoenix is much more likely. Now I won't have the choice on where to go so I just have to grin and bare whatever is coming my way but I am wondering what is popular out that why. What is there to do other than watch the cardinals? What restaurants are popular and is there a nice downtown area?

Phoenix metro is actually made up by a number of smaller cities.

You've got Tempe, Mesa, Scottsdale, Gilbert, Chandler, Peoria, ect all surrounding it.

Tempe (Mill street in particular) is the home of ASU and where the college night life is. Scottsdale is very upscale and where the more adult oriented night scene is. Chandler(home to Intel) also has a pretty good bar scene.

Gilbert and Mesa are more residential in nature.

As was said, do a search for Phoenix. Quite a few of us have been in your situation before. I did the the move from IA to Phoenix a few years back. I'm now in IL.

you say gilbert and mesa are residential areas. I want to live in a nice residential area thats not far from night life. I just don't know what to expect out there.

The nice thing about Phoenix is that outside of rush hour times, it's easy to get around. If you lived in Mesa or Phoneix you could get up to Scottsdale or Tempe in under 20 minutes.

Will you be doing apartments? Phoenix has some of the nicest apartment complexes I've seen. There are many there that border on luxury resorts for reasonable prices. When I was there in '04 you could get 1300 sq/ft 3BR apartments w/ a private garage on a gate facility with a great pool/workout area for around $1100 a month. This was on Baseline road on the border of Phoenix and Tempe.

Just came back from there. Expect weather a bit warmer than Hell and buy chapstick by the case. I can't imagine living there, let alone visiting, during the summer.

They're rebuilding a lot downtown. I thought it was pretty nice. I went out to some very very nice restaurants and paid less than I would at a regular diner out here in California.

What can you expect? Hot weather and finding out there are 1500 drop houses for unarmed invaders on Phoenix.

Das right! 1500. You won't have any trouble finding day laborers working for slave wages

What is standard construction there? Block walls..wood walls? I will be living in an apartment. Does anyone have any they recommend?

It really would be dependent on where you would be working. Depending on locations you could be looking at leisurely 10 minute drive, or 45 minutes of stop and go hell.

I spent the last two summers working in Phoenix. Its not that bad, I almost prefer it to the Texas heat+humidity (you certainly sweat less). If it was up to me, I'd get a condo in downtown Scottsdale, walking to nightlife FTW. There is no public transporation to speak of, although I guess you could always call a cab.

The dry air is what kills me. Vegas is worse in my opinion but Phoenix is pretty bad. Also, when it's 85 at 6am during the winter it kinda rubs me the wrong way.

Just stay away from swamp cooling. Usually only a problem with older (for phoenix 50's-70's) apt buildings and houses.

Expect housing prices to fall big time. That is, if you want a house, hold out on it for a bit.
