Move on project

Stormgiant

Senior member
Dudes,

after doing SETI for about two years, RC5 and OGR for another 2, Sob for a few weeks ( and some other project in between for tests... ), I decided to move my P4 to Distributed Particle Accelerator Design (DPAD) project.

It seems to me a more appealing project and also in need of some suport from TA.
I will be moving some computers that I can reach to DPAD and also grabbed a new member to TA meanwhile.
His nick is Pirate and has been helping me for a couple years now and now shows itself in the DPAD project.

For anyone who would like to help-out moving the team up on the stats 🙂, here is the link : DPAD Project

Cheers,

From what little I was able to see on their website, it looks like DPAD runs pretty well without net connections that happen too frequently. If anybody can confirm this, I'll install it on my "work" system in a few days (a 766MHz Celeron that only gets infrequent dialup connections) to replace Dnet.

I usualy do a manual send every couple hours, but the client can hold work for a long period of time.

Haven't found out what is the limit of the "result.txt" file 🙂

You could try it, no ? 🙂🙂🙂
Run the client for a couple of days and then send the "result.txt" from another computer with net.

I'm going to do that on one of my work puter. If it works fine, i'm gonna install it on several others.
I'll post the results here later on.
That's one reason why I couldn't assimilate more computers for SoB...

Sounds good. I'll be trying it (DPAD) soon (incidentally, I tried SoB on that computer as well, but ran into a similar problem).

Hi Storm giant🙂 ,long time no see!

Cool project that 1 ,the part that particularly caught my eye is the bit about trying to neutralise radioactive waste

- - - [Science Aims] - - -
The experiment is called the Neutrino Factory, scheduled for construction some time around 2015. Its primary aim is to fire beams of neutrinos (fundamental particles) through the Earth's interior to detector stations on different continents. They're doing this to measure whether they change type en route (there are 3 types of neutrino) and data from this in turn will allow them to determine the neutrino's mass (and whether it even has mass).

The reason they want to do this is that the neutrino is just about the most common particle in the universe (billions pass through your body every second) and if it has mass, this could cause the universe to eventually recollapse on itself. Knowing the mass will also allow scientists to make better models of how the universe began.

Actually the machine that's being built (costing at least $1.9bn) has several scientific aims. The neutrinos are used for fundamental physics experiments, but the proton beam that is produced at the start (this hits the target rod at the beginning of the simulation you download) is also going to be used in experiments for neutralising radioactive waste by transmuting the radioactive elements into stable ones.

You are simulating the part of the process where the protons hit a target rod and cause pions to be emitted, which decay into muons, which then proceed to a storage ring and decay into electrons and neutrinos. This is a fairly critical part of the apparatus, which catches the pions and confines some of them into a beam while they decay into muons. The efficiency of this dictates that of the entire machine. If the R&D says it isn't efficient enough it may not get funded to be built, but users of this program have already doubled the estimated efficiency, so it probably will.

Good luck on heading TA up the ranks🙂

Hey dude,

Yes, i've been out of the TA forums for several months, but i'm usually around just reading when i have time.
Now that i have more time at night, i've started getting more seriously again in DC.

I miss the old times with the races and the surprises we did on some members, cracking for him for several weeks without him knowing...
Cool times 🙂

Let's see if i can do two things at once, help some dudes on their work to improve our life and help TA onto Worldwide domination 😉

Assimilator1,

According to this article, since it appears that neutrinos can change types, they must have mass.
#2 Neutrino Mystery Solved

Interesting stuff! 🙂

Well, got it installed this morning. The "work" system is a computer at the church where I work (yes, I have permission) that is used for audio recording and stuff. The hidden client is nice because it doesn't show up in the task bar and confuse the other people who have to use the computer. 😛

Hopefully I'll have some results to sumbit this evening. How long does the average unit take, and on what kind of system? 🙂

Hi Stormgiant, winr here.
I will try my Mom's PC with DPAD.
She is not online a lot so this might work good on her PC.

Regards.

🙂

I'm glad to hear that you found a project that really appeals to your interests. I think that it is important to do a project that suits your own individual needs and interests. It doesn't matter what project you do as long as you are loud and proud to be a part of it and a part of TA.🙂 Maybe this project will attract a new group of people to TA that otherwise wouldn't have given DC a chance.🙂

Thanks dudes,

the first two teams ahead of TA are quit easy to catch 🙂

jliechty, dunno about the time, but on my rig is very fast 😉
I've done about 900 units in 5 days.

I'll post daily stats when I gather enough information to see tendencies...
I haven't much work done now cause last week i was on holidays. Tomorrow i'll start assimilation of the world 🙂

Well, it looks like I finally showed up in the stats. 😛

My estimates show that I should be able to get around 60 to 70 "WUs" per day with the machine that I'm running DPAD on now; hopefully that will help the TeAm a little. I'll be sure to keep my eyes open for more potential assimilations (this appears to work well for machines with unreliable dialup connections - machines that Folding@Home wouldn't go on). 😎

I like this project.
I think they might need me more than D2OL.
I will, most likely, split up a little.

Kk

Long time, no see Stormgiant!

I haven't been around here too much either since moving most of my DC work to ECC2 at TechIMO. Best of luck with the new project. 🙂

Hey buddy of arms...

The Rc5-64 team has been widely spread 🙁

Today i'm a little pi****f... i installed yesterday the DPAD software on 3 puters. today, i went there,
moved the Results.txt file to the USB flash drive and when i got home there wasn't one single file of them.
I said :"WTF ?"... all the files on the disk were there except the 3 .txt files 🙁🙁🙁🙁

Bummer.... and i made a move on the puters there, so there goes all the work flushed thru the USB port 🙁

Stuff like this makes me a little sob 🙂

I still didn'y figured out what happened to the damm files.

You wanna put one or two computers in here Viz ? 😉

My more scientific estimates at this time are that a 766MHz Celeron can produce 91426.11 particles per hour, or 66.2 WU per day. If I can assimilate more machines, I will. 🙂

Stormy-

I have a couple of off-line Celerons, a 550 and an 850 that I might give it a go on. The FAQ says it uses 6-10 MB of RAM, so that's not bad, less than SETI if I remember correctly.

I see they have a CLI version. I assume it's a little faster than the standard version.

Also it looks like there is no download of work, so it would be great for stand-alone machines. 🙂

I prefer the "background" version of the GUI (muon1_background.exe). No 3D simulation, no taskbar button, and no systray icon... if you want to kill it, just do so from the task manager. 😎

i concur...

great for my upstairs p3-450 system on dialup. can go to it every few days and manually send the results..

neat project

hmm..DPAD can be run as a service...is this like SETI where you wouldn't even have to be logged onto an account on the PC for it to run?...

DPAD might just be the thing for my school's computers ....risky 😉

Stormgiant
In future copy it over don't move it ,that way if it goes wrong you still have it at base🙂 (I learnt that off some of the old RC5 guys snekker netting with floppies😉)

Yes Viz, run the muon1_background.exe... it runs on the background and way better than the gui 🙂
Good to have you aboard........

I know Assimilator1, but i never thought that the USB drive would fail on me 🙁
I also did that on RC5. Today I just sent one of the results.txt file by mail 🙂

Overkiller, yes you can. Just use FireDaemon to set it up.

Let's go TA.... only 5 days to overcome next team 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

Awesome! Hopefully another small dump will be coming in from my remote box tonight. 🙂
