Ok, so i turned 18 last sunday (4/20) and am thinking about moving from Central FL area to upstate NY, around Syracuse. I currently live w/ my mom and stepdad here, and they are really strict/dumb about a LOT of things and I cant quite afford to get my own place down here. I have a job here, nothing special, 20-25 hrs a week for the county. $9hr intern w/ IT department. It's really a "temporary" position so it wouldnt be like im leaving a good career behind. Friends? yes, i have some here, nothing SOOO special that i couldn't leave behind. GF? no, we broke up last month. Basically I'd be moving in w/ my Dad in his 3 bedroom apartment, he's alone. He's cool about everything, I have some family up there, (ie, aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins). Basically Its just a REALLY big change, and a big move, quite far. I go to do it, and just get scared of leaving everything i know here.... HMMMM, what do yall think? Is their just as many job openings up there as there are down here, or possibly more? i'd have to live off my measly savings until i got a job...

Upstate NY's economy has been in the sh!tter for years. Better check Monster.com or the equivalent just to check the quantity of jobs (quality is obviously an issue too...)

well my dad has been looking at some, i know i could get a bs job, you can get those anywhere, (ie, restaraunts, stores, etc) but he has seen some data entry, computer support jobs pretty locally. All i really NEED to make is like...$300 a month for all my bills, i wouldnt have rent as of yet.

Well, let's compare locations.

Florida:
Good side: In Florida, you have hot sun, hot babes and lots of american goodness.
Bad side: Hurricanes that would kick your *** into next century, crocks that will eat you, mosquitos that will suck you dry, and poisonous snakes.

New York:
Good side: Lots of great food, plenty of entertainment, and the monitary capital of the US.
Bad side: Robberies, muggings, shootings, thugs, gang violence, extremely bitter winters, and it is now the #2 most favorite target for terrorists, second only to DC.

Hmm, with all that in mind, go with floriday. You can always take a vacation up south should a hurricane come through. The crocks and other creatures can be delt with too. 😀

around leesburg, fl. rent? none. either place, possibly where i live now soon. not up north tho. and its upstate NY, so not teh CITY. and my parents down here, take away all teh joy that would come from living in florida. :disgust:

You must not get out a lot. New York's changed in the last oh 10 years. Also Syracuse is no where near Manhattan...

Edit: Do you plan on going to college?

Don't forget in your comparison that Florida is a friggin nightmare in the summer

and of course, Syracuse is a friggin nightmare in the winter...

its like moving from horse sh!t to cow sh!t.. florida sucks man 🙂

Yes I typo a lot. What's your point? 😀 And where the heck did you get the Syracuse thing??? OH, and just because 9/11 happened in NYC doesn't mean that the whole blinking state isn't a terrorist target. Al-Quida don't care.

No ones forcing you to stay 🙂

I live about an hour away from Syracuse. First, how about the weather? Two weeks ago I lost power for four days thanks to an ice storm. Last weekend? It hit 80 on Easter Sunday. Crime isn't really too bad, unless you get involved with drugs. About the worst I've personally experienced is one of my teammates getting his car stolen during a football game, and it was found a week later stripped. Besides that, it isn't too bad. Now jobs. I don't know about Syracuse, but at least here in Rochester, there aren't many. A lot of young people, myself included, are moving away once they finish up high school/college since there basically isn't much to do around here. Taxes are relatively high. How this compares to Florida, I can't say. You'll have to decide.

Al-Quida definately cares. Look at what they attacked. The twin towers (twice), the Pentagon, and possibly the White House. Somehow I doubt the Carrier Dome is high on their list of targets.

I am from Syracuse, now in Atlanta. Let me tell ya, the economy there is CRAP!!! There is nothing there. No jobs, no entertainment, nothing. You would be better off looking to move somewhere else. The winters suck, but you get used to them, although it going to be hella cold to you coming from Florida.

Unfortunately, I am moving back to Syracuse in August to catch up on debt, get back on my feet, visit family, the wife is pregnant so we need to save money. I will be going back to school so the economy isn't a big deal to me.

All the businesses are moving out of the Central NY area, Syracuse was a manufacturing city, manufacturing is moving over seas. So now the city is crumbling and they plan on doing to increase jobs would be to expand the mall. I think that plan has been scrapped with no forsight on any plans of building the city back up.

well i don't know about central florida, but i lived in miami for 15 years and go to school in ithaca (hour south of syracuse). i like ithaca much better than miami, but this is due mostly to the fact that i have much more independence up here (as does any student studying away from home). also, i hate miami traffic and the killer summers. i snowboard, so i actually welcome the winters. when i graduate i don't plan to stay either, nor do i want to go back to miami...........i'm not much help, i know. just thought i'd out in my 2 cents.
