Move files, programs, etc from old laptop to new laptop??

Not sure where to post so I'll start here.
Going to buy a new laptop.
Old laptop is 7 plus years old. I've updated it to 8 gig ram, new ssd, etc. Old unit just cuts out and shuts down when moved around too much.
Old laptop is running win 7. Most software is a few years old.
New laptop will have a 250 gig ssd, 12 gig ram, etc. Win 10 home.

I'd like to move as many of the old programs from the old laptop to the new one.
I need suggestions, ideas on how to do this. Want to do it as economically as possible. (cheap LOL)
Thanks

If you're going from Windows 7 to Windows 10, you will need to install the programs on the new computer. Not to mention the hardware would be completely different, so it wouldn't be a good idea to clone your old one and put it in your new PC.

As far as transferring files, you can use a USB Flash Drive or an external hard drive if you have one. Or you could even buy a USB SATA transfer cable, remove your old drive, and transfer over your files that way.

This would be the best.but for the programs better do a new installation,it will save you time and tylenols.

Just to be clear, I was only suggesting transferring files over via removable media (photos, documents, music, etc.). As far as getting the programs over to the new PC, he just needs to install them on the new PC.

I agree, I couldn't imagine the headache of trying to somehow transfer an installed program from a Windows 7 PC to a new Windows 10 PC.

Agree fully about the flash drives. OTOH, it is an inexpensive option to get an external (USB) optical drive and have the capability to deal with CDs & DVDs. It can also save you a lot of time.

You can use USB drives as the others have said, but, also note that lots of software you can't just "move" like that, they will need to be re-installed.
Some of that software will also refuse to install on another machine, since the key/serial/whatever is tied to your original laptop.

For personal files, you can also use cloud drives, which is really easy with dropbox or whatever else.
