I'm surprised at the Laser's as well.
I've got the MX518. I was very hesitant about getting it at first as I was quite accustomed to the Ball Bearing type.
I've been quite pleased with it though, even if it was a bit pricey.

That's an impressively thorough and scientific evaluation of sensor performance. The low performance of the lasers was certainly surprising, although it doesn't matter much to me, since I only have one laser gaming mouse (G3) and I'm a high sensitivity gamer anyways. I was very interested to see how different polling rates affected performance as well - I had never really believed that it did anything. Well, except for the 1010.
I would have liked to have seen a few more mice included in the comparison, though. I think the G7 should have been there, to see if the wireless connection has any effect on objective performance, and the Razer Diamondback Plasma LE should definitely have been tested to see how well the fairly unique infrared sensor it uses performs. I also wouldn't have minded seeing the Razer Viper in the test - it was the first optical mouse to hit 1000 CPI, after all. That's history right there, man.

Yeah, my wife was going to get the wireless one (don't remember the model), but the thing just looked HUGE.
I also didn't want to worry about interference from/with any of the other devices I have.

That article is a bunch of BS, no one moves their mouse 40" a second, my screen would need to be 50,000 pixels and 50 feet wide to justify such movements.
The guy doesn't even understand DPI. DPI is about accuracy, not pointer speed. You can turn sensitivity (how far/fast your mouse moves based on a given distance) up and down without ever affecting your DPI - ie your precision.
Whether it takes you the whole length of your mouse pad to draw a 10" line or half of the mouse pad, has nothing to do with your DPI because you can change it by changing your pointer speed/sensitivity.
Increased DPI will translate the minute movements, a more accurate translation of the line you draw - a higher DPI should result in a line with more imperfections (minute as they may be) because it can pick up the subtle up/down (not just horizontal) movements you make. A lower DPI mouse will create a straighter line because it?s translating the larger movements without the degree of precision a higher DPI mouse can give you.
I turned my sensitivity down on my 2000dpi Copperhead to decrease my pointer speed. Did it decrease my DPI? No, it is still 2000dpi accurate. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised, a lot of gamers out there don't know the difference.
The only thing he might be remotely correct about (although he certainly didn't need to waste his time with all his "experiments") is his value conclusion. A $50-70 certainly isn't going to gain you any huge advantage over a quality $20-40 mouse. I still love my MX510 and would sure as hell still be using it if I couldn't afford to spoil myself with a laser based Copperhead.

Huge? The G5 and G7 are almost identical to the MX518 in terms of size and shape.

There is/was another model about a year or so ago that was rather large.
It may have been the MX, but like I said, I don't remember the model number right off.
I don't recall seeing the G5/G7's available when I had to get a new one (my roller mouse had broke), at least not locally. I had needed one quick so I was fairly limited in my selection - I kinda lived out away from things back then.

MX1000 - that sounds familiar, though looking at some pics I thought it was larger than that . . . . hard to tell for sure though it's been awhile.
