Mouse that starts at high DPI

My Logitech MX510 FI, starts off at 400 (800) DPI, then requires software to raise it. Do other mice, especially Razer mice (but, I can go for others), start at their highest DPI setting?

The situation: I've recently gotten a job, and have only a normal mouse (300, 400 DPI?), and my wrist is starting to hurt, though I'm fine at home. At home, though, I don't move 3+ inches to go over 1200 pixels--it's about 1 inch, and my arm doesn't have to twist. But, I don't have admin access on the box, so it needs to be detected as a normal PS/2 (er, USB) mouse, and *bam* work at a high DPI setting.

Logitech G5--selectable DPI on the fly. Great mouse for stuff like that.

Without any Logitech software installed? Selectable DPI is not unique to that mouse. My concern is specifically that there's no software needed beyond basic support for a 3-button mouse.

All of the Razor and Logitech gaming mice have selectable DPI w/out the need for software. Software allows for adding additional DPI selections and the customization of DPI rate per selection.

yes, without software. i have never installed software for my g5 and the dpi speed buttons have always worked right out of the box, before the initial install screen even gets to the desktop. i liked my old razor mouse, but that thing simply died on me after 6 months. not worth it if it dies. my g5, bought used, looks like its been beat to hell (as it has) and still works 100% like new. over 2 years old now.

Logitech G5 it is, then!

(I considered the G7 and Copperhead, too, but Logitech acting typically weird with batteries nixes the G7)

howdy,

i changed from a G7 to a razer deathadder, and i have to say its really nice.

if the g5 is just a corded version of the g7 with additional weights, get the deathadder...it looks and feels sexy 8) the response is great too, i think its 1ms

no doubt in my mind, best mouse you can buy. mine has had 10x the use and abuse as my microsoft mice, and both the M$ ones have failing buttons. the g5 is built like a tank, it wont let you down.

Yeah, Logitech's service is nothing to write home about, but I went through 3 MS Optical mice (couldn't they have come up with a more creative name?), and the cheapo Logitech I switched to from those is still in use; and my MX510 (I wanted WIn2k support) has given no troubles in Windows (and it looks like a newer Logitech should do fine with Xorg, from what I've read).

I thought I'd have to go with Razer, and I do like the designs, but I'm not totally keen on the failure rates. I'd get the G7 if Logitech would freely sell the batteries (or use a cell/pack popular for something else).

I've got a three monitors set up in a horizontal continuous desktop, and I use a Razer Copperhead. Before I installed the driver I could move the pointer from the left edge of the left screen to the right edge of the right screen in about 3-4 inches of mouse movement. It was definitely less than the width of my mousepad.

*Edit: That's a bit over 3100px from left to right

Update: I've completely forgotten to order the mouse for ages, here. So I needed a GPS, and lo, Newegg had a good price, and then, "hey, I need to get that mouse!"

It works great! I may have to replace my MX510 now, because my work mouse will be so much better. The additional tracking smoothness really is significant. My only real complaint so far is that with the extra width compared to the MX5xx, the middle button is a little awkward to reach (I mouse with my fingers). Otherwise, I'm quite happy with my ver 1 G5. The weights are actually useful in practice, too. Not so much of a gimmicky feature, now that I've played around with them.

I just got the DeathAdder.
Lovely, except its a little bigger than the Viper it replaced.
I actually kind of liked the small mouse, I felt like I could dominate it.
