Mouse Strangeness

Hi Folks,

I have a first-generation MS Mouse with Intellieye - their first go at the optical tracking system. It's the two-button job with a scroll wheel.

Anyhow, I seem to have trouble running it on my PS/2 port (jerkiness), so I'm using it in a USB slot, which it is designed for as well. At times under USB a single click is interpreted as a double-click, which is starting to drive me crazy.

Anyone have this happen to them? Any suggested solutions?

My system (getting long in the tooth):

300A@450
Abit BH6
256 MB PC 100 RAM
TNT2 Ultra (CL I think)
MX300

That happens to me too, it's really annoying. I'd like to know a fix too. What OS do you have? I've got Win2k Pro.

Microsoft has had many problems with their optical mice, particularly the first generation (the ones that looked like the regular msmouse). What happens is that inside the mouse housing and at the connector to the mouse housing, small wires have a habit of breaking or making intermittent contact, causing the problems you've described.

Go to the Microsoft Online support center, and report the problem. In your post to them, give them your full name and address AND the make/model and serial number of your mouse (don't forget the serial number!). Report the problem you're having.

Tell them you're aware of other user's problems with these mice, and tell them that you've tried the normal troubleshooting (latest drivers, blah blah blah).

They will send you a new Optical Mouse fairly quickly.

Oh, btw, mine isn't an Optical mouse, it's just a regular PS/2 MS Mouse

It's ussually a driver conflict, I have the original intellimouse here, and have had the same prob, what I do is to DL the latest drivers for it, save it to disk, then go into safe mode, and remove the mouse in device manager, reboot, and install the new drivers, about 90% of the time this works. I've noticed that the prob starts after another program or hardware is installed in my puter, Mouse drivers must share with many other apps.

Sure, I would try newer drivers first, too. However, the wire breakage on these mice is a documented problem. I had two of the original MS Intellieye opticals, and both eventually went bad due to the same problem.

Slikkster,

Thanks for the tip. I went through Microsoft's tech support service, and lo and behold, they agreed to replace the mouse! Will wonders never cease??

Thanks again.
