Mouse / Shutdown woes

edit - agreed that having the mouse on ps2 port is probably better than usb - it definitely fixes the shutdown problem, but I really thought USB had a larger bandwidth than ps2!?

Although the computer shuts down fine, the mouse's red light and keyboard's num lock stay lit for an infinite amount of time afterwards (in this case, all night long)...

<snip> <snip>

NEVERMIND! - found a jumper for Wake-on Keyboard, and its enabled by default, so with it enabled, and disabled in bios, the motherboard didn't know what it was waiting for.

Boy, and they sure put that jumper in an awful spot!! Had to use some tweezers.

have u tried getting a USB to PS/2 adapter? Not only should that fix your problem of USB devices still being powered but you'll also be able to get a higher sample rate on your mouse... USB only goes upto about 120 hz while PS/2 can do 200 hz. You can pick one of these adapters up virtually anywhere and shouldn't pay more than a few bucks. I'm surprised it didn't come with one, my logical optical wheelman did

yeah - the mouse comes with one...but I always thought USB was better and faster than the PS2 port? Besides that it takes up one IRQ - right?

Yes, your USB controller only takes up one IRQ... but it's not faster than PS/2... it's just more conveinent i guess, maybe easier to plug in or make? The market is really pushing for USB everything, and some machines only haev USB heads and nothing else... however, like everything else it has bandwidth limitation. For your mouse u should use it on PS/2, however, if u don't adjust the sample rate via PS/2 rate then u probably won't notice any difference. To point out another slow aspect of USB, look at the network cards. ISA cards can only do 10MBps (1 meg/s), PCI can do 10/100MBps (6 meg/s), USB can only do about 3MBps (I think the top transfer rate is somewhere around 360kbps).
