Mouse pointer position wrong

My wife's Compaq notebook's mouse pointer is periodically out of sync with the screen. The actual pointer is an inch above and a 1/4 inch to the left of where the screen is indicating it is.

The mouse is a MS notebook optical. She's running Win XP and the graphics chipset is ATI.

Any ideas?

try reinstalling your mouse drivers, they should be on the cd that came with the lap.
