Mouse or Trackpad?

I'm not officially a Trackpad user, used a mouse for as long as I can remember (not long) and I probably still will dust off my mouse for PC gaming (of which I do very little, but I'm now 100% Keyboard and Trackpad, bought a Magic Trackpad today to make the final move for my desktop and I won't be looking back.

I disagree, they both have the same purpose that they achieve differently.

For laptops, pointing stick since most touch pads suck. For desktops, mouse.

I personally use the TrackPoint in my ThinkPad and a Logitech G500 for my desktop.

Jesus I hate those pointing stick things, I thought they died out in the late 90's.

If you've ever actually used one long enough you can see that it's the most thought-out and intuitive design for laptops. You never have to get your finger off one single position and as a result it's much better for typing. Having the left and right click buttons as well as a middle button just below it makes it hands down the best.

Track pads have a smaller learning curve but are definitely inferior. Now that I've used the TrackPoint for two weeks, I turned the track pad off entirely.

Yes, but depending no the task at hand, one is clearly preferable over another. I would not want to use a trackpad for gaming or mucking about in Photoshop (and yes, I've tried several times) or a mouse when I'm on the go trying to edit a text document.

I haven't seen a "clit mouse" (trackpoint) on a laptop in ages though...

Still standard on ThinkPads.

My order of preference:

1. mouse
2. Easyball (can't get anymore)
3. trackpoint
4. trackpad
5. touch screen

I first tried a trackpad back in the 90s in attempt to deal with carpal tunnel. It was worse than the mouse for this. I even tried mounting the trackpad to the side of the arm of my chair to get a better elbow/wrist position but didn't help much. I ended up going with the 3" diameter EasyBall trackball which worked very well but only had one button. I wrote Microsoft begging for a second button but it wasn't to be.

I prefer the little eraser nub over a trackpad. They suck.

Trackpad for OS X and mouse for *. Trackpoints are just terrible. If both of my hands have to stay on the keyboard, then I just use one of my thumbs for the trackpad.

Apple's Magic Trackpad here. However, all other trackpads I've ever tried to use have sucked badly.
