mouse/keyboard freeze momentarily, then go back

This problem started about three weeks ago, and I've not been able to find a fix. Every now and then, usually when my cpu is really churning, my mouse and keyboard will lock up (sound will stop as well), and then about five seconds later (depending on what I'm doing), it will go back.

I've tried reinstalled all my devices, and nothing's worked. Help would be much appreciated.

This happens a lot for me too - it could be anything untoward that makes the OS stop and ponder for a moment: memory leakage, IRQ conflict... Someone suggested it has something to do with pipelining on the motherboard. Not too sure about all that stuff tho.

It might even be something to do with this

Are they PS/2 mouse and keyboard?

IRQ conflict comes to mind to me too..
Try going to device manager and view resources by connection. You can check to see if your keyboard and mouse is sharing IRQs with anything else. I know of a way to possibly fix this, but Im not sure it will. You can change update the driver of "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" under "Computer" in the device manager to another setting, but I'm not sure which one it was. I know "Standard PC" was one of the choices and thats not the one I used. If you are using a Nforce 2 motherboard IRQs are shared alot and I've read that this fixes IRQ problems.

It might also be some kind of virtual memory realocation. Be sure that you have enough RAM, and I suggest to set a minimum size for the virtual memory (right click My Computer, click Properties, Advanced, Virtual memory is somewhere around. I set the minimum size at at least 128 MB, usually more.

First of all, they're both ps/2.

It's not an IRQ conflict. This was my first guess as well, but unfortunatly that's not it. My virtual memory is set to a minimum of 256mb and nothing's changed. I've got 512mb (ddr) of ram.

If there are any other clues anybody's got, it'd be much appreciated.

Update: I plugged in a completely different USB mouse in, and it had the same issue.

Also, it seems to be ONLY the mouse, because there are times when the mouse will lock up but I can navigate with the keyboard, etc. In fact, that's every time.

Some hardware has the neat ability to handle certain error conditions on it's own. I'll dig and see if I can find a link to a good place that explains it for you.

This error handling is completely independent from Windows (or any OS on the system) and may spend as much time as it likes handling things without any way for the OS to regain control.

If that's what you are running into (quite possible... most cases of it I've heard about/experienced were on laptops) make sure your BIOS is updated.... outside of that, not much you can do. (again, assuming this is the reason).

Are your mouse and keyboard plugged directly into the pc or do you have another device in between them such as a KVM switch?

Hi,
a friend of mine had much the same problem, except that his system was very old.
Even a reinstall of windows didn't do it, nor did a stream of new mice.

Could it be something like static in the ps2 pins? maybe if the psu isnt doing its job properly?
is this just plain daydreaming and trying to find a link with something that isnt therr?

Please post your results if you win against your computer.

There's actually a converter from USB to PS/2 between the mouse. It's a USB mouse, obviously. The mouse gives the same symptoms, though, if it's plugged in via USB or PS/2.

My BIOS is updated.

I've never heard of MemTest86 before.
