Mouse dying symptoms?

So I've had my Intellimouse Optical for about 4 years now, and I've had no problems with it what so ever. I think its one of my best purchases I've ever made for my computer, moving from a balled mouse.

Recently its been acting a bit strange. The sensitivity would change to a very very slow state. I would check the mouse properties in control panel, and the sensitivity is the same. The only way to remedy this is to unplug the mouse and plug it back in. It gains full sensitivity for a couple more hours, or until the next day or whatever.

I'm not quite sure what causes the mouse to do this, it just happens randomly no matter what I'm doing.

Is a change in sensitivity a sign of a dying mouse? Any suggestions on what mouse I should buy to replace this one?

Thanks

Well, if you like that MS mouse so much, then you'll probably like the newer optical mice from MS. Personally, I think most of the MS mice are too big, and I've used Logitech exclusively for about 8 years now.

Regardless, definately go to a local store like Staples and/or Officemax to see how the different models feel in your hand, and then decide.

It seems all the nice looking stuff is cordless :(. I'm looking at that MX510, and it looks funny. I don't know If I could get used to it.

Right now I'm looking at this keyboard and mouse combo. Its more than I'd like to spend though.

Can anyone confirm my mouse is indeed dying? If not, how do I fix it ;).

i'll assume by sensitivity you mean that it moves slower on the screen when you move it on the desk?

good chance its a driver issue, try downloading/installing the latest mouseware drivers from microsoft for the mouse, uninstall the original ones (if you installed them) first, then reboot, and install new.

after 4 years of use i think its little mouse feet have got to be pretty worn down.... time to give it some well earned cheese and buy a fresh one.

i hear hamsters are better anyway.

Thanks alot for help.

Yes, thats what I mean by sensitivity. It would be fine, moving as fast as I'd like it, then it would suddenly slow down to the point where its unbareablely slow. Control Panel's mouse area has the sensitivity where it should be, and the only way to remedy the speed is by unplugging it from the USB port and replugging it back in. Then whenever it decides to go out again, I'll have to do the same thing. It could be a couple of minutes, other times it could be a couple of hours between each instance.

I'm not sure if its a driver problem or not. I've always used the standard WindowsXP Drivers, which should be updated an updated version of the one on my desk, and I've never had this problem for the last 2 or so years I've had XP. Also, I did a few "tests", it seemed at first, whenever I lifted the mouse from the pad, and put it down, the issue would occur. So I did a few tests and slapped the mouse a few times(maybe theres a loose connection or something), and appeared to have turned on and off two or three times (I could hear MS's chime for a device being unplugged and plugged back in). I tried to do it again, but it didn't work.

You're right about the feet :), they're pretty worn out, I'm surprised they havn't fallen out yet. The glue between them is very weak now (I can slide the feet around on the bottom, and peel them off pretty easily).

Well, to do it justice and to put it to rest, I have decided to buy a new keyboard and mouse to replace my current Microsoft Natural Keyboard and Intellimouse Optical v1. I ordered the Logitech Optical Elite Keyboard and the MX510. Its about time I got dark colored mice/keyboard to match my case ;). I've always been a little-MS fanboy when it comes to input devices, but it seems Logitech has the upper hand when it comes to price and features, so I decided to give them a chance.

If these two devices last anywhere near as long as my current keyboard and mouse setup I'll be very impressed. I've had this current setup from my hand-me-down Celeron 300a @ 450mhz with a TNT1, with 4 different motherboards, 5 different CPUs, and 4 different videocards, all the way to my current 2500+ @ 3200+, and a 6800GT. I think, aside from my monitor and speakers (something I'll replace soon), these are my oldest computer devices.

Anyway, thanks again for the reply. I've already done the deed and ordered my replacement, so I'm not sure how much more discussion can be held in this thread.
