Mouse drift - why?

I have a Logitech MX700 mouse that even though it is not moved the cursor will begin to drift up the monitor. I thought this might be a dirty mouse pad problem so I went out and purchased a new "optical ready" mouse pad. It drifts less but still drifts at times. The batteries are fully charged, even tried new rechargeable but it still drifts.

Is this just the mouse dying? It never used to do this. The mouse is about a year and a half old.

have you checked out the optical sensor to see if there is anything causing a weird readout? (piece of hair or something)
