Mouse Cursor Freezes Every Few Minutes - Vista 64

Hey guys,

I got a problem I've been experiencing lately. I'm not sure what set it off. It's a new computer, specs are:

Gigabyte P35-DS3R Mobo
Intel Q6600
XFX 8800GT
WD 7200RPM 500GB HD

Basically, no matter what I'm doing, every few minutes my mouse cursor will freeze and I can't move the mouse for 1-3 seconds. It doesn't matter if I'm on Internet Explorer, playing StarCraft, or playing Crysis. If I'm not playing a game, (i.e. browsing windows or internet) when the mouse freezes I can often see the little Vista "busy" circle (formerly hourglass) next to the cursor, so I'm pretty sure it's not related to the mouse itself, rather something else going on in the background. I haven't installed much lately other than Office XP, but I've shutoff the startup entry under msconfig.

Also yesterday, I tried to install the nVidia 168.09 beta drivers for the 64-bit Vista, and it failed miserably. I lost picture, so I had to reboot to safe mode and rollback to 169.02. That being said, I think I was experiencing the problem even before the driver change.

If anyone has any insight, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm running Vista x64 as well, and use a Logitech MX518 optical. No problems here. I spose you could try:
-uninstalling the setpoint software and rebooting
-trying a different USB port
-uninstall setpoint, and try a generic PS2 mouse
-wouldn't hurt to look in the event viewer as well to see if it's reporting any problems.....

at least we may be able to figure out where along the line the problem lies

Oh, and do you use/have any other USB devices hooked up as well (kb, joystick, etc)?

I think I have the same mouse. MX518. It's a couple of years old. For some reason I don't think it's the mouse itself thats the issue. Probably some service or something in the background. I will try changing USB ports.

I also use a Viewsonic USB keyboard. I have not installed any drivers for either as they both work. The mouse, keyboard, and an HP5740 printer are the only USB devices.

This is not something that has been present since the PC was built. It developed over the past 4-7 days.

I can't find any errors in the Event Viewer, even if I check right as the problem happens.

EDIT: Changing USB ports hasn't helped. Problem is still there. I definitely think it's something going on in the background. You can hear the HD choke for a second and the cirle (formerly hourglass) come up every time it happens.

I've been trying to catch the error under Process Monitor but it's so difficult, the list is so fast. Plus I haven't found a way to sort the results using the column headings. I'd like to be able to sort the actions by the 'Result'. I think there may be some entries that pop up when it happens, but it's just too fast to catch on the list.

Ok, I've managed to spot a few BUFFER OVERFLOW's in Process Monitor, around the time the mouse freezes. Again, it's hard to be sure since theres hundreds or thousands of entries scrolling by. I've seen it on svchost.exe, on monsync.exe, and maybe on one other process.

I'm going to try running Kaperseky's online virus scan to see if it picks anything up.

Event Viewer does not show any errors.

Any input?

Hmm....well just to be sure I hooked up a PS2 mouse and I haven't had any freezes yet. So its either the mouse, or the USB ports. How can I find out?

This thread is a few months old, but I can't tell if there was actually ever a resolution. I have a Logitech Trackball wheel mouse that is doing the EXACT same thing. I have two other mice, one MS wireless optical and a regular optical, both are USB and neither of those has the same problem. Now, I am sure someone will ask why I don't just use one of those, and the answer is simple, I do. The only time I use the trackball mouse is when I am playing Counter Strike Source. I find the agility of the trackball in a FPS game to be quite beneficial, plus I don't get shot because I bumped into my keyboard and couldn't turn around all the way and deal with that one guy who always seems to catch me with my back to him, Grrrrr I hate that guy. Anyway, I just upgraded my system, hardware overhaul and upgrade from XP to Vista Ultimate 64 bit. After a big pile of bugs, I finally got it ironed out.... ...except for this one damn glitch. How did this all resolve for you DeusDeus?

Update 1/11/09

Almost one year later, I am still forced to use a standard mouse as I have not yet found a solution to the freezing. Is anyone out there? Does anyone else have this problem, or used to have this problem and found the solution? Here are some more in depth specs on my system.

Vista Ultimate 64 bit
ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Windsor 3.2GHz Socket AM2 125W Dual-Core Processor
G.SKILL 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory x2 4GB RAM total
MSI NX8500GT-TD256E GeForce 8500 GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 SLI Supported Video Card

REALLY ANNOYING ... just started about 2 months ago, probably one of the "upgrades" ... can any one help ... only way out of frozen mouse is Cntrl Alt Del, and step thru the choices, hoping it clears, then cancel ... really an irritating situation ... cannot a smart person resolve this for me?

Tks, richard
