mouse and keyboard freeze in Win ME

The mouse and keyboards inexplicably freeze from time to time without any apparent rhyme or reason. I'm using IBM's Active keyboard and a MS IntelliMouse. I know the entire machine doesn't freeze because time keeps going and apps continue to run (I get IMs).

Any ideas?

Have you tried USB KB/mouse? I shocked my MB once while plugging in a USB device (I saw the little blue lightning bolt) and my PS2 mouse port would freeze on and off while I was working.

i tried to go USB with the mouse, no shock, but windows would crash on startup. no other indication anything was wrong.

Try it with a plain PS/2 mouse. Sometimes too many "active" "gee whiz" devices get in each other's way. Sounds like the keyboard and Intellimouse are trying to use the same path at the same time . . . a collision results in a freeze of both.

Hey, I got a Explorer mouse too and have the exact same problem. When I use it as USB, it turns off and on, and says "detected new hardware(mouse)" each time. It's very annoying. So I use the PS2 conversion, than it still locks up here and there. More you use it, more it locks. pisses me off.. Running Winxp here with the latest driver for the mouse, etc.
