Mounting Zalman 7000CNPS

How exactly is everyone mounting their 7000? Mine is one of the ones that didn't come with a mounting bracket or anything. Did you just use the HSF bracket that comes with A64 boards or what? That's what I'm using at present and I'm having problems. 🙁 It's way too difficult to install it with the "nipples".

=.= I believe they all come with brackets and nipples. Correct me if I'm wrong.
 
The one i installed on a ECS/AMD board did not come with a mounting bracket. i used the stock one. Care must be takien so the mounting screws are not cross threaded in the golden nipples, they are aluminum and fragile.
The ECS board was very crowded and i had to shave the area of the fins right above the ram
as it touched by about .7mm. Had i missed this the HSF would have not been on the CPU.

Use a small mirror and flashlight, take a very close look around the lower fin area. You should be able to do this with everything in place. A woman's compact mirror is about right for the job. Shine the light beam on the mirror to place the light where needed and the image in the mirror will be as clear as day.

When the HSF is lowered onto the CPU it should be turned 1 or 2 degrees both ways to be sure its seated before being fully tightened.

The CNPS7000 (non-A or -B) only comes with a set of nipples but no mounting plate to put on the underside of the motherboard.

Are you saying you used the golden nipples in combination with the plastic mounting bracket? I tried using just the plastic mounting bracket and the screws that came with it, and it seems to be a tight fit. Also, should the clip on the heatsink be above or below that notch on the heatsink? I have mine above the notch because it will tilt if I have it below the notch.
 
My mobo came with the mounting bracket. The top portion was removed and the golden nipples were screwed into the bracket that was now loose on the bottom of the board.

The shiny steel mounting bar fits into the groove that is machined into the heatsink.

Zalman's site has a flash video of installation proceedure.

Make sure the lower portion of the fins touch nothing.

Does this amount of AS5 look good? I added more since I moved from my Neo2 to my Neo4 but it doesn't seem to have helped.

My CPU is still getting really hot under stress at stock speeds, usually around 70C before I stop running whatever it is. It idles around 45-50C when just browsing and some other light stuff. This is all according to CoreCenter though, so I don't know about the accuracy of the temps. All I know is that temps shouldn't rise from 30C to 70C at stock speeds. 🙁 Any suggestions?
 
As one Pole to another, i have played with three CPUs. Two Intel that were not flat, they were a little high at center and one AMD Athlon 3200 that was dead flat. The two Zalman 7000 i've mounted were very flat and true. If you go to Artic Silver's web page they give very explicite instuctions on the use of thier products. I'm sure they will back me up on the fact that you used way too much. A skin of no more than .002" is all that is needed. That pic looks like your tiling a bathroom. Your not laying tile buddy, just a thin skin. That little syringe of AS5 is good for 15+ HSF installs. Use a credit card or a new single edge razor blade that feels perfect to the touch(no scratches).

Yeah, I know that too much paste isn't good either. Well I cleaned it off and reapplied it, and so far I'm stable, but the highest temp I got to at stock while running 3DMark05 was ~64C, I think. I did notice one thing though. The alarm on Corecenter went off because the CPU fan was spinning at ~700RPM! Right now it's spinning at about 1400RPM instead of 2500RPM like it should be. I also tried removing the Fanmate 1, but the fan still seems to spin slow sometimes. Maybe I should lubricate it?

I think I put on a little more than the 2/3BB as recommended by Arctic Silver, but it's hard to tell without an actual BB for reference. I suppose I'll try overclocking a bit and see how things work out temperature-wise...

The fan is most likely adjusting its speed (via your BIOS seetings) to the varying CPU speed, this is normal and a good thing. It also means you don't need the Fanmate at all; disconnect it and let your MB control the Zalman.
 
Temps were still unacceptable after a few days, so I decided to check the thermal paste again...

I don't remember having this much trouble getting AS5 to spread well on my CPU. 🙁 I added a bit more and tried to spread it out, but temperatures still aren't much better. And it reboots while loading Windows at 222*9. Right now I'm having to settle for 210*9...
 
You want a thin layer of AS5, covering the entire cpu and especially where the cpu and heatsink contact.

I have the CNPS7000B-Cu, it looks to me though as if somethings preventing you from making perfect flat contact with cpu and heatsink. Maybe uneven mounting screws into the motherboard? The mounting bracket of the CNPS7000 shouldnt be bent at at all to make it contact, even then theres probably no perfect flat contact.
 
I don't know if this will help, but I had problems with my CPU getting too hot (42-46C idle) and I applied the AS5 just like the instructions said so then I decided to reapply it and spread it out (I put it in the middle then I took a plastic bag and spread it like that) dropped my temps to 33-35C idle and my video card temps from 60C to 47-50C idle 😀
