Mounting IDE drives vertical ?

okay I might get myself a Directron SF-201-B case, BUT it has a vertical drivebay (drives sitting on their sides)

I just wanted to know, doesnt this affect the lifespan of the drive ? (because I can imagine the drive arm engine has to work harder when it has to beat gravity, and how should I mount it then, with arm down so it fals down when shut down or with arm up ?

Hard drives are designed to work in any orientation, so you neednt worry.
The layout of the drive cage is going to dictate the orientation of the drive, not concerns about it's lifespan. It's a nice case, I would go for it.

I'm in the UK, and I know the feeling...
It was I nightmare trying to get a decent case shipped to me.

I don't remember seeing a UK retailer selling them, but I'll let you know if I stumble across one.

Dell Dimension 4100's come with a vertically mounted HD in the front of the case. If a large, reputable, comopany like Dell trusts doing it, it is probably OK.

I've worked around many Dimension 4100's and never seen any HD issues in particular.
