Mounting a kitchen range vent hood

NetWareHead

THAT guy
Have any of you guys ever mounted a vent hood and not needed to use a cabinet overhead? I dont want to get an expensive hood that has a "column" (not sure of the terminology) that goes to the ceiling, want to avoid holes in the ceiling. Would rather have this duct into a pipe where I can dive into the wall behind it bring it to the attic and then out to the exterior.

I've always seen vent hoods mounted under a cabinet but I'm trying to avoid purchasing an extra cabinet just for mounting a vent. Want a standalone hood if possible but usually standalone ones are built for looks and cost $$$. Am I going to have to purchase a cabinet?

If you get creative you can build a box just big enough to hide the 6" elbow. Mine exits right out the wall in a 3x10, and you could plumb in 3x10 as far as you could.
They are still designed to hang from above in most cases, so you need some sort of strong box to hang it on. How thick it is depends on your engineering prowess. It could be very thin if you make some strong brackets.

that is what we have and love it. I got it for less locally.

Thanks but damn, that is a little expensive. This is for a rental and if im going to spend > $600 on just a vent, I might be able to overall do it for cheaper and get a overhead cabinet and a much less expensive vent.

oh no, I'd not use that in a rental. The way it works will be similar though. you could use a through wall 3x10 duct system on any other choice.

a cabinet is going to be your cheapest route.

You can mount any stove hood to a wall. A couple angle irons and maybe a support cross member between studs. Yes you will have exposed duct but it would be cheaper than a cabinet.

I'd buy the cabinet. 30" wide by 12"-15" tall cabinets are are extremely cheap. Depending on the unit, get at $30 Braun hood vent with a $60-100 cabinet and be done.
