mountian bikers? bike stolen. getting new.

my bike was stolen 2 nights ago from the bed of my pickup truck. My old Trek 800 was awesome when i got it many years ago. I hope who ever has it appreciates my through maintenance.

I ordered a new trek 4500. what are your opinions of this bike?
I love the handle bar mounted lockout for the front fork.
hydraulic breaks even. Its kinda fun to have to bleed the breaks on a bike.
what are the major maintenance items i have to do on the new bikes?
 
I traded in my Trek 6000 for a Specialized Stumpjumper FSR 29' mid-way through the summer and I couldn't be happier.

You will love the 4500, mainly for the brakes and the geometry. Plus, the new bikes just look better. Handle-bar lock-out is meh because how often are you really riding somewhere you want to lock out?

Major maintenance is clean, lube, ride. You shouldn't have to mess with the brakes and if you do, I was suggest taking it to the shop!
 
Nothing major. May want to clean the thick factory gunk off the chain and replace it with something thinner. Might have to adjust te shifting a tad in about a month. That's about it.


Bleeding bike brakes is easy. Shouldn't have to do it very often though.


If you must fiddle, set up the fork right for you. Dunno what you got, but you might play with positive and negative air pressures and rebound.
 
i have the 24" version, love it. only maintenance i do is take it to the shop twice a year for tuning.

Nice upgrade from the 800... better not leave this one on the truck. ()🙂 You might have to adjust the slack on the shifter cables after they break in and stretch.
 
already looking at a good way to haul/lock up the bike in the truck. My fuel cans and 2 storage containers have a cable lock through them. I really don't have any other place to put it when i am on days off, away from my apt.

any recommendations on racks or carriers for my pickup? I was going to use 2 cam buckle straps to hold it upright in the bed. thinking about getting some of this to mount on the side rails:

Locking up a bike outside for more than 10 minutes and outside of direct line of sight to yourself? Expect it to be stolen soon regardless of what you lock it with unless it's inside a car and someone has to break into said car to get it.

what do you suggest i do with it then? when i am home i will put in the apt. but i am away most of the time when i am riding. I can not have a cap or tonoue cover for my truck as i have no place to remove them or store them when i use my camper or haul larger items.
 
I have never seen a horrible Trek bike. For certain, it is going better than anything at wal-mart. In that price range, however, yeah, it should be about as good as other brands out there (like specialized). Remember, Trek is well known, so they have a name to protect.
