I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this as I've never had problems like these with OS X.

I get random freezes - can't move mouse, capslock doesn't work, no response. Only option is hard reboot.

Sometimes I get grayscreen with the error.

I'm running Skype, Vmware and Windows, Preview, Mail, Safari... was just reading a website when it happened last. Seems random.

Looked at the system log, not sure how to pickout the point where i did the hard reboot, closest thing I found were these entries:

Could this be some form of DoS attack?

OSX 10.8.2 Core i5 Macbook Air, 4gb Ram.

^ Since it happens randomly I would try running Memtest. Do they have Memtest for OS X?

If all is good run Prime95. :D

If all is good then run APPLEJACK. That'll fix a lot of problems associated with system cache, preferences files, and it'll fix damaged files and what not.

Once APPLEJACK is installed you need to reboot and press Option + S key or something (I forgot exactly what keys). Type the command "applejack AUTO". Make sure the AUTO is in all caps.

    have fun

Great question. There's no error code or description from what I recall, just a message saying it's shutdown due to an error and I can wait 10 sec or press any button and it'll reboot.

Trying Applejack, thanks for the tip :)

No Problem! ;) I just wanted you to describe the error that's all and maybe I could assist you. But honestly, I would disable mDNS responder and this might cure the issue. It does apply to 10.8 so you should be good.
