Mountain Lion: Apple to Bring iPhone, iPad Features to Mac

MacWorld Hands on

AirPlay mirroring looks like the best enhancement so far.

From the Apple link that alfa147x posted:

Download the free Messages Beta and send unlimited iMessages to iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, or Mac — from your Mac. It’s a taste of what’s coming in OS X Mountain Lion.

I don't think this should have been a 10.x update. It should be 10.x.x :\

Those are just the 10 that they are talking about. Gatekeeper could be a real big deal, and Messages was the right move all along.

Notification Center looks cool.

Looks like they're finishing what they started with lion. Even though it's seemingly little more than a collection of apps ported from iOS, I think it's going to end up being something really special - provided you're willing to buy into the apple ecosystem in full. Instead of having a fragmented computing experience (my smartphone does this, my pc this, my tablet that) - each device is just a tool to access the same environment, all synced up by icloud.

I feel like I'm kind of selling my soul a little bit to buy into it...but I find it an incredibly compelling vision. Each device they add into this ecosystem makes every other device more valuable - the apple TV is obviously a part of this future, and who knows where it goes from there.

Not sure what Notification Center would be useful for, but I'll have my eyes peeled.

Right now, I'm just wondering if they were able to improve interface performance over Lion. If they want to move to Retina displays on Mac, that's kind of important.

I know what you mean. I just got an iPad as a gift, and then i went out and bought an AppleTV. Between those and my Air, I feel like my Windows Phone is now painfully out of place.

For Notifications? Just throwing that out there.

Except with the potential difference that if you clear out or respond to a notification on your iPhone, it doesn't show up on your Mac. Or vice versa. Which is actually really useful instead of being a nuisance. Hope it works that way!

Think of notifications like OSX having Growl built in. Which is good.

I agree, with the added feature of the notifications being pushed across all iDevices. This is a big advantage over Growl.

I installed Messages Beta and so far, I really like it. They should get rid of iChat entirely. I'm really looking forward to Mountain Lion release, it looks like to be a great time to own an iPhone with a Mac as they are so well integrated.

Wait, if Messages is replacing iChat, does this mean we're losing built-in support for AIM and Jabber?🙁

I'm hoping that the AIM and Google Talk integration makes its way in to the messages app in iOS 6.

This is all, of course, a very logical progression and why I have said that the 'personal computer' is dying. Within 10 years, devices that we use will just be devices, front ends to access our information stored in a central location. Now, not EVERYTHING will be like this. But I'll go out on a limb and say the ultra vast majority of computer usage will be.

It's the future.
