Mountain Bikers - Is this a good deal?

I've been talking to a guy on Craigslist regarding his 2008 Specialized Rockhopper Disc, including clipless pedals and shoes. He's looking for $550, but I negotiated him down to $450 including the shoes, which just happen to be in my size.

The bike has barely seen any use, and almost none in the woods, so it seems like I'd be getting a pretty solid idea. What do you guys think?

Best time to buy a used bike is in the fall and winter when all the stupid morons who though they were going to be the next Lance Armstrong/mtn bike equivalent tries to unload their bike to buy christmas presents or something.

I havent followed the specialized line for a few years but that seems to be reasonable, you should be able to get it for about half of original retail depending on condition.

I'm not finding a Specialized model called the disc from 2008. Is it a Rockhopper comp disc? It looks like that one had an MSRP of $900 but typically sold for $100 or $200 less than that.

If it's in like new condition that sounds like a good deal.

My apologies - it is the Rockhopper Disc

On a bike with little use that's not a bad deal. I'd say go for it...maybe see if he'll drop it down to $400.

I may try that. He's moving to California, so he may be desperate. I had originally been looking at the specs for the Pro Disc, so now seeing that it is simply the 'Disc' model, I am less enthused about the drivetrain, and may be hesitant at the $450 price point.

Yeah you can probably find a nice used set of Deore for around $100 to replace those Altus/Alivio parts.

Are Alivio all that bad? Back when I was last into mountain biking (~8 years ago), I ran Deore LX, but can I get by reliably for a while?

I currently ride on a 2008 Fisher Tarpon with Altus components, and it's terrible.

I've got Alivio components on my bike. They aren't terrible and while they probably won't do well in the most extreme use they're fine for running down the trails that I do. Sooner or later I'll replace them but until then they seem to be doing fine.

A nice entry level bike that I would guess goes for around $550-$600 new. $300 maybe but $400 + meh. Think I'd just find some left over old stock bike on the net and buy new.

of coarse being summer I don't see any great deals on the web after doing a quick look either 🙂.

I bought a rockhopper last fall for 600-700 new. I like it but haven't put many miles on it.

Yeah, I ended up not getting it. At $400 it just didn't seem like enough of an upgrade from what I ride now. I'll email him in a week or so before he moves to San Fran, and see if he still has it available, and wants to drop it in price a bit.

The tires were mostly flat when I got there, so it appears he's neither used it, nor had anyone come check it out lately.

Am I the only one that has problems with chains snapping when a bike hasn't been used for a while? I remember one year I went out for a ride and broke the chain twice just peddling out of the parking lot to the trails. After the 3rd snap, I gave up and left and bought a new chain.

Never happens to me, but I neve let my bikes sit too much.
I put on a new Sram chain once a year, good to go all season.

Be careful buying a bike on Craigslist especially if the deal is "too" good, and especially if the seller seems "too" eager. Lots of people selling stolen bikes this time of year on that site.

I ended up buying it today for $375. Not the $300 I was hoping for, but a solid deal overall, considering he threw in a new specialized helmet (I needed a new one anyway) in addition to the shoes and the bike.

I took it out for a quick 8 miles tonight, and man is it great! It is so smooth compared to my beat-to-death Gary Fisher Tarpon.
