For anyone who's interested in knowing, I bought a Trek 4300. I had them switch out the regular seat for one made for a woman and add a light and a longer stem.

montanafan - Thanks for the update, I hope you enjoy your bike. Is the Trek 4300 a men's or women's bike?

<--- I love my Mongoose for all you Mongoose haters! Bought it several years ago for $400. Looks like it's time for me to update, maybe a Specialized is in my future ...

Thanks, RossMAN. It's a men's bike, but I got the small size for a better fit.

Like most the people here recommended, I think that's the best solution. Trek makes awesome mtn bikes, hope you enjoy it.

Have you bought any accessories yet, gloves (Pearl Izumi's are great), helmet, reflective tape for night time riding, etc.?

The only accessories I bought were a Trek helmet, Catseye light, Smith & Wesson protective eyewear (hey I know, but it's what they sold at the shop), and then had the seat changed out. I'm thinking of getting gloves and a rear-view mirror (don't know how useful those are though).

you will definitely want/need gloves. improved grip and some vibration damping. Mirror will be helpful if you are ever in a street situation, but probably a hinderance on a single track trail.

sorry i didn't read the whole thread... did you get toe clips? handle bar extensions? Toe clips you will want ASAP. handle bar extensions are a coonvience, but not a neccisity.

sorry for the poopy spelling.

Hey, yamahaXS, I'm thinking of getting the extensions, but I don't know about the toe clips. I don't think I'd be very comfortable with them.

Don't get Toe-clips pedals. They are inconvienient off road. Get a set of clipless pedals. Or as I did, 1 side standard platform and the other side clipless. You need special shoes for clipless. They have a cleat under that snaps on the pedal.
Price for a combo pedal is ~$50 new. A pair of good shoes are ~$100. Look out for any sales.

Second that: clipless pedals are a PITA for a short period of time as you're getting used to them, but once you've gotten the hang of clipping in and out they are actually both more efficient and safer than toeclips. Check out Performance Bike or Nashbar.com for specials on shoes and pedals.
