"Mountain" Bicycle Bike $45 @ Target

Research on this item is definitely advised. There are 2 key points of concern: 1. the quality of the parts may not be up to par (ie. safety issues), 2. the installers often make many mistakes when assembling the bicycle due to them being pressured to finish the job quickly.

So basically if you want to maximize your investment if you choose this bike, it would be wise to read up a little on bicycle assembly and DIY.

I wonder what exactly makes this a "mountain" bike? There's no suspension fork, no suspension tail or even seat post, no bar ends...looks like any other cheap bike to me.

of course it's cheap as hell, it's a bike under 50 bucks at Target

I did a Yahoo search on this bike and didn't come up with very much. However, the below link to a bike forum ought to provide some useful information about these "bargain" bikes in general:

Catch a bus to Target, then ride the bike back home 😀 (j/k)

I realize this is not a fancy-schmancy bike, but it's good for people who just ride it around the neighborhood, etc. As for assembly: Yeah, I wouldn't trust the big box store employee to build it. I bought my bike from overstock.com and assembled it myself. Sure, the brakes don't always work, but brakes are overrated anyway.

no it isn't. It will likely break and seriously injure you. Do not consider this for any sort of mountain biking or serious transportation. For those of you who will ride it once and leave it in the garage to rot for 10 years it might be a good choice.

You are much better off picking up an old schwinn or trek at a garage sale.
