One is just the glass and the other is the entire LCD assembly/electronics (digitizer)+glass?

Some phones have the glass/digitizer glued together and are difficult to separate. If just the glass cracked and the digitizer is fine, a glass replacement will be fine. Otherwise, if the digitizer is broken, you have to buy the whole thing.

The first is just the glass. The second is the digitizer. You need the digitizer if the display itself is damaged underneath the glass - usually you know this is the case if the picture looks messed up and if screen presses/taps don't work or don't work properly (jumps, phantom presses, dead zones, etc).

The screen/digitzer has the display electronics while the glass is just... glass, hence the price disparity.

Get the first one, then when you break the digitizer trying to separate the glass you'll need the second one.

I don't know why they even bother selling just the glass for phones that are glued together.
Nobody replaces just the glass anymore, it's too big of a pain in the ass to do and takes a long time.

I tried to change just the glass on a galaxy phone before. After a hour with the hair drier I attempted to separate the glass from the digitizer and the digitizer cracked on me.

I ended up football spiking the phone onto the floor and then cut it up with a set of bolt cutters lol.

It's not worth the hassle, send it back to motorola and have them fix it so you can guarantee good work.

So, on the Gen2, the outer glass is glued on? And maybe a heat gun helps to melt the glue? If you did get it off, you can just install the glass without glue? OR are ou saying don't even bother trying, since it's a guaranteed fail ?

Ok, turns out both layers of glass are cracked.
I see replacements digitizer on Ebay for $120.

Is it pretty easy to replace the entire unit ?
I've done battery swaps, etc.

This. I did this very thing earlier this month to my wife's 2013 Moto X. I had 90% of the glass off, and prying one of the last little bits off I cracked the panel.

I pretty much did the same thing last week to an iphone 5s. It was a freebie so spending 6 bucks on the glass was no big deal. Once attempted and the digitizer cracked I threw it in the microwave for the hell of it. I then some massive pliers and went to town. Gonna grind it into powder and sell "as-is".

Damn, this was a 2 hour battle royal. $130

For this project, I had to buy myself a Torx #4 bit, as my supplemental Micro Torx kit didn’t go that small.
T4 makes a standard micro screwdriver set feel like a 48” pipe wrench. Smallest screws I’ve ever dealt with.
I bet you could pass those screws like a kidney stone and not even feel it.

After heat gunning this thing to melt the glue, I ripped out one of the cable connectors while using the “spudger” to pry the back off.
Then, I stripped 3 screws just unscrewing them. Had to drill them out.

I even grazed the battery, at one point. It didn’t appear to be leaking.
And I still had to tear the phone apart on that last drilled stud that wasn't fully drilled out.

The only thing that didn’t fit was those 2 stupid long thin “mesh” plastic strips that looks like speaker grille?
The replacement LCD frame didn’t have it. I removed them from the old frame, but they just would not snap in.
I used flush cutters to cut off the tabs, and just crazy glued them into place.

I can not believe this phone still works, and looks perfect from the outside.
I will now nonchalantly give it back to her and say it was a breeze... Ha.

Good job man, some times they can be a pain in the ass but you did it the right way
