i don't remember the SS doing sub 5 seconds box stock...

A regular Z28 can push the 5 second mark, especially with suspension upgrades.

While times obviously vary with altitude/humidity/temperature, I believe there were stock SS's under 5 seconds with a good driver.

Granted I'm not one to compare stock to modded cars, but it's pretty easy to get a <5 sec 0-60 out of a LS1 F-Body & stock they were pretty damn close.

I'd still rather have the '02 Firebird WS-6 with the RamAir package.

I guess I wouldn't put my stock in the MotorTrend tests, because the times will always be faster than what you can really get out of them. Wait until the new mustangs get out to your local track and see how they run there. After that is where it counts, not in some magazine article.

In addition, despite the recent re-birth of the muscle car (which I'm happy about) the old cars are still more entertaining to drive. There really is no replacement for displacement when it comes to pure fun driving.

Sure there is. Ultra light weight. 🙂 That makes straight line and curves fun to drive.

have times changed that much? i haven't read any of the car mags in YEARS but i remember that motor trend always got the slowest speeds, road and track and car an driver always seemed to get faster times from the cars tested.

This continues to be the case from my observations. Car and Driver always seems to get the best times out of cars with Motor Trend always falling behind.
