I am not surprised at all about the Infiniti, but I am somewhat surprised that they would put the RL over the 530i. I do think the RL could be a better car (I have driven neither) than the 530, but again just somewhat surprised. I wonder, though, how well the 545 would stack up against the RL.

Because the 530i looks like ass and it's slower.

once you've driven a 530 and an RL you'll see there isn't much comparison. Severely underpowered.

Why would they use the 3.2 A6?

Uhh, b/c all the cars tested were 6 cylinder models?????

Why wouldn't they do it by price?

B/C f0r $45k, you're only getting a 6 cylinder model. The A6 4.2 starts at 50k

Well, it might be worth reminding people that the current 3.0L I6 found in the 530i and 330i is coming to an end in a few months, to be replaced by the 225hp 2.5L and 260hp 3.0L units. Then sometime in 2006, the 3.0L will receive FI to produce a minimum of 300hp...while the M3 gets the 400hp V8 from the previous M5.

FI=?

only thing i can think of is 'fuel injection' which they obviously already have.

Maybe direct gasoline injection?

Uh...no. It starts at $41k. Hell, the V6 "Luxury Performance" version is almost $50k.
